I’ve been watching “Occupy Wall Street” with interest

I’ve said several times that I thought the business world was loaded with people that behaved in what could be described as a treasonous manner. I suppose that my suggestion about having them shot by a firing squad after their trials was a bit over the top.

It’s been interesting to watch the Occupy Wall Street crowd try to describe their beliefs. Depending on who is asked you’ll get a different answer about why they’re occupying anything.

There is always a person saying that the rich don’t pay enough taxes.

I don’t think these folks have really thought their argument through, here’s an example why;

I once had a conversation about Obamacare with a gentleman educated at MIT. I’m paraphrasing here, his opinion was that the rich had more than enough to pay for everyone else’s Obamacare and that the government should just take their money via higher taxes. When I asked what happens when His income bracket was considered “RICH” and his money was being taken? He responded that there’d be another discussion then.

I pointed out that he was advocating what I understood was socialism in it’s worst form. And that the “Rich” had more than enough resources to simply leave the country. Even if the rich didn’t leave, the system that he was advocating was certainly going to act as a disincentive for anyone working hard to become rich.

I did enjoy pointing out that this persons beloved Lakers had a disproportionately large number of very wealthy individuals. The conversation cooled after that.

My point is, that all too often “The Rich” has become a code word for White Republicans. Herman Cain being the notable exception, however he does fit the “Rich” category. It’s going to be tough to get cooperation out of any group of people who feel that they’re being singled out and essentially punished because of their success.

The other major group seems to be more on point

This group seems to be demanding accountability from the financial community.

The question is what kind of accountability? I think it’s safe to assume that the Obscene Bonuses will not be paid back and the cash is safely in a Cayman numbered account.

So what are we as a nation wanting?

This is where it all falls down. Without some clear points and the ability to articulate those points it won’t take long before Occupy Wall Street is viewed as a bunch of disenfranchised, unemployed “have-not” rabble.

Once that happens the moment will be lost and the changes OWS organizers were after will be lost in the chaos of water cannons, tear gas, and flying bricks and bottles.

I hope the OWS folks understand this and have some kind of plan.

In my desire to be helpful, I’ve come up with a list of demands.

No more offshoring of Consumer Financial business.

This includes ALL transactions, record keeping, bill payment, collection, in short anything that puts The private data of Americans in the hands of foreign nationals.

Lets face it, right from the get go this is obviously a bad idea. My fax machine is deluged with calls, some from Indian cell phones trying to collect on loans that have been paid off for decades. I can only imagine what that would be like if I actually had past due bills.

If you want a chilling thought, realize that if these folks have your phone number they probably also have old account numbers, addresses, and possibly social security numbers. In short they have everything necessary to create a false identity.

Now think about some entrepreneurial soul in the Philippines or India who frankly doesn’t understand how damaging it is to have their identity stolen, selling a nice packet of your information for $25 a pop to a criminal… If that doesn’t make your sphincter tighten I don’t know what will.

All the Mortgage Lenders Have to take a Haircut on their outstanding loans

We all know that a lot of property was way overvalued. I once looked at a $400,000.00 one bedroom condo, with no parking in a less than great area in San Jose. It was a “Fixer-upper” in that there were no fixtures in the bathroom and drywall walls were missing. At the time I busted up laughing at the realtor and told her she had a great sense of humor. She didn’t get it, and  I didn’t buy the condo. That kind of money could buy me a 4 column antebellum mansion in the South with a ton of land. For me living in San Jose just wasn’t worth it.

Part of the housing market implosion was caused by folks being told they could “Flip” their housing investment and trade up. That led in part to the overheating of the housing market and an unrealistic valuation of the worth of homes. The Mortgage Lenders themselves and their insane lending practices just kept fueling the bloat.

Come on folks… when does it make sense that you can buy a house with less documentation than you need to buy a car?

Those poor lending practices were just a way for the banks to obtain property that artificially inflated their net worth on paper.

Most of the lenders knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that the “No Documentation” loans were probably going to default. The bankers were hoping to “Flip” the loans at face value before they got stuck with the default. It was a game of musical chairs…

Well now the music has stopped and the banks aren’t victims… They were players. It’s time for them to pay up.

The average American family who didn’t use their homes like an ATM shouldn’t have to pay the price for bad banking and those folks that did.

We should demand that mortgage lenders, lower the interest rates of all outstanding mortgage rates to 2% or less, cut the values of the mortgages to what the properties are really worth, stop all foreclosures, and make the mortgage lenders put all the foreclosed homes in their inventories back on the market.

Where possible, any displaced families should be offered their homes back under the new terms.

Bring Jobs back to this country

There was a sound bite on the news the other day. This lady in North Carolina made a comment like; “They put those people to work in China by putting all of us out of work.”

She makes a great observation. What kind of jobs are there for Americans now?

The President has advocated Trade schools and certificate programs in lieu of college diplomas.

We can’t all be Lawyers, Financiers, Politicians, Doctors, or information workers. The latter category being outsourced so fast it makes your head spin.

So what other professions do we have?

We do little heavy manufacturing these days compared to the past. Many of our steel plants are shuttered, our Auto industry has been under siege for decades. There are very few consumer electronic manufacturers here anymore. There is virtually no textile manufacturing here. Mechanics and repair professions are still in demand. Most of these positions have traditionally been filled by Trade school graduates.

Where does this leave those who have been displaced by outsourcing?

Unemployed!

So why not demand companies bring the jobs home?

The answer almost always is that American workers are too expensive. Really? I know I’d take less money if the other choice was unemployment. Of course the worker taking less money also means that taxes have to be lower. The cost of goods and services have to be proportionately lower and there’s the problem.

No one knows how to make that happen.

There’s a sense of “Fairness” in our country. There’s a belief that everything should be fair and if we bring these jobs home there are going to be people that are still making 100K a year and there will be people that only make 15K a year. This class disparity is considered unfair, (even though it exists today and always has.) folks LIFE is inherently unfair! Get over it.

Bring the jobs home. Put people to work, and let the free market economy sort it out. We know that free market economies work because of the housing market debacle.

Houses became overinflated because lenders were making obscenely large sums available. Now housing prices are falling because people can’t get loans for obscene amounts anymore. People that bought high or leveraged the shit out of their homes are screwed. But housing prices are falling and “Correcting” to a more realistic value.

The same is true of steak, corn, chicken, turkey, internet, electricity, or whatever. If lots of people turn off their internet or Cable TV because it’s too expensive, the cost will drop. Folks will buy chicken instead of steak, if the cost of steak is too high. More people will learn to actually cook instead of relying on pre-prepared nukeit meals. or eating out. Maybe it will be a twofer, the prices will be lower and we’ll get a nuclear family again…

My point is, that keeping jobs offshore because you’re worried that the American worker won’t work for less is stupid when you have so many workers unemployed in the first place.

We should have faith in our economy, and we should nurture that economy by putting our people to work instead of folks in third world cesspools that fucking hate our guts anyway.

So there, you OWS people. You’ve got a simple list of 3 demands and you’re welcome to use them. Hopefully you’ll wake up and realize that simply occupying anyplace without a reasonably well articulated point isn’t actually helping.

You’re just killing the grass under your tent.

Political Shopping around

I’m just not getting over it. I’m truly disgusted with the Republican party, I’ve always been able to find some common ground and feel that in general they represented me. Over the past 10 years or so I’ve found myself far less represented.

The Florida Presidential debate served one purpose. It catalyzed my dis-satisfaction with the GOP.

For the first time in 30 years I’m shopping around for a new political party. I never actually “Shopped” before.

I registered to vote one day at a mall with my Mom. At the time I think I wanted to register as an Independent but then my Mom pointed out that as an Independent I wouldn’t be able to vote in presidential primaries. That made no sense to me, I also couldn’t see why anyone would register with a party that limited their voting ability.

I asked Mom what party Dad was. She said Republican and so I registered as a Republican. It was as simple as that. As things turned out, it was a choice that I was comfortable with until now.

As I’ve been shopping around I’ve been reading about the various parties by visiting their web sites.

While I feel I have little in common with the Democratic party I still checked out their web site. It just confirmed my feelings.  Within the first couple of paragraphs in their “About Us” page, they come across demonizing the wealthy. That’s Ironic since the leaders of the democratic party are in fact a damn sight wealthier than me (I’m after all, an evil wealthy Republican). As I read more about the party I really couldn’t get past the fact that it’s leaders today don’t compare to the formidable leadership of the partys past. So no, the democratic party is not for me.

I checked out the Tea Party they’re not  officially a party, but I’ve been accused by certain people of being a tea party sympathizer so I thought I’d check ’em out. Their web site is interesting since they’re pretty equally displeased with both the Democratic and the Republican parties. They point out a Failure in leadership on the part of both parties. This actually mirrors something I’ve been saying for years. But I’m not a Tea Party person… YET!

As I thought about it, I realized that I’d never really paid much attention to the “branding” the Republican party gives itself. When I went to the site I expected to see something about the party history, goals, core values, etc. You know, something to help a new voter decide if the party is for them. That’s not at all what I found. Sadly the party web site appears a bit amateurish and provides no information for a new voter. Instead the site looks more like a fear mongering site. It’s not until you look under the “Issues” section that you find information about the party position. I think I understand why so many friends looked at me like I had two heads when they found out I was a Republican.

I found this Quiz which says I’m a centrist with Libertarian leanings.

I thought “Hey the internet quiz may be right” so I went to the Libertarian party site. This party seems to fit my beliefs better than anything thus far. I have always been about personal responsibility, and minimal government. The question is if I register Libertarian do I give up any voting privileges?

The Green party caught my attention. But while I’m all for eco-responsibility, and grass roots community based politics. I’m still a capitalist pig, which seems a bit incompatible with the greens. However, if they present a candidate that I believe in, I’ll vote for them.

The Independent party… WOW! Not for me! I think my beliefs and these folks are completely at odds. That is the beauty of our system though. Everyone can have a say and be represented by people of like minds.

There are 53 political parties listed as active in the United States (Thank you Wikipedia). Many of these parties I’m not interested in.

I’ve never even heard of a large percentage of them. My thinking is, if I’ve never heard of them then it’s unlikely they will field a candidate either for president or for local offices that I’m interested in.

I was surprised to find a Nazi party and Socialist party active in the U.S. Who’d have thought these parties would exist in 21st century America? Well, political freedom is one of the things that our country was founded on…

At this point, pending further investigation about voting in primaries I think I’m going to be registering as Libertarian.

The Republican Candidates SUCK!!!!

I’ve written about them in the past and here I am writing about them again. Much as I try to ignore them, they keep making their slimy way into my consciousness.

Rick Santorum needs to drop out of the race. He’s already demonstrated amply that he is not presidential material. He may be married and the father of 7 children, however anyone that is as hung up on Gay anything gives me pause.

I can’t count the number of rabid homophobes that ultimately end up in a bathhouse, ass in the air begging o be fucked by the biggest cocks in the place. Given that he’s Catholic… well I do wonder if he’s damaged goods thanks to a bad priest.

I’m honestly confused as to why so called “Gay” issues are so important in the republican camp.

We as a country have much bigger fish to fry and the candidates would do well to stop harping on the gay issue. Something like HALF of our country doesn’t care about DADT, Same sex marriage, or the gay issues the Republicans are beating to death.

What the people seem to be concerned about are things like the economy, Jobs, foreign policy, and the national debt. These are things that Republican candidates should be speaking about.

DADT was a bad law. It created yet another “Less Than” situation. It told our troops essentially “Yeah you’re good enough to die for your country but not good enough to be yourself in your country.” or to put it more bluntly “Yes, you can fight and die for freedom but you, faggot boy will never have freedom and we will always hate you.”

Isn’t is a better idea to have everyone who’s willing to lay down their lives for this country INVESTED in the belief that Freedom applies to all equally?

After all that IS what we’re taught in school. Or are we willing to say that the public education system is nothing more than a propaganda machine, and that the Freedom our founding fathers supposedly built this country on was reserved only for “God Fearing” Christians? Oh! Wait… uhh yeah it was.

The Republican candidates response to Stephen Hills legitimate question was beyond rude and demonstrates why so many people (including, most likely me) are leaving the Republican party.

When I got up the morning after the debate, I was for the first time in my life, ashamed to be a Republican. There is no defense I can offer for the candidates behavior, or for that matter the people in the crowd. Shame on the Republicans in Florida…

That man is a soldier and he’s fighting to protect your freedoms even though obviously he’ll never enjoy those Freedoms in Florida.

Yes! All the people of Florida were just painted in an even more negative light because you were rude on national television. I really hope you’re all proud of yourselves, don’t forget to bring your Crayolas to the voting place, the whole country knows you can’t handle pushing a stylus through a piece of paper.

Stephen Hills question was a legitimate question for all the gay folks serving in the military.

Since he’s now out of the closet, if DADT is reinstated does that mean he’s looking at a dishonorable discharge if a Republican president is elected?

If he’s near re-enlistment, a hostile President would have an impact on whether he continues his military career or moves back into civilian life.

The question remains unanswered. And it will remain unanswered because the genie is out of the bottle. There is no way you can have a subset of gay people that outed themselves when DADT was repealed stay in service if DADT is re-instated.

Since those that outed themselves while DADT wasn’t in force didn’t break any laws, they can’t be discharged. In fact discharging them would be illegal and I’m sure would be challenged in court.

So how the hell are you going to keep track of who is legal (outed while DADT wasn’t in force) and who isn’t (entered military after a new DADT policy)? Perhaps pink triangles would work. Oh wait… that’s been done.

The only choice is to discharge every self identified gay person.

Problem is, that’s not in the militarys best interest. Too many gay people hold speciality positions. These positions are hard to fill and require lots of training. Does it make any kind of sense to cripple the military effectiveness just so you can reinstate a bad law?

Rick Santorum may think so, but I’m pretty sure the Joint Chiefs would tell him otherwise.

That’s really the bottom line.

The Republican party is out of touch with what is relevant in the average persons life. A large percentage of the American people are not in fact driven by puritanical beliefs.

Most of us are people of faith, but not rabidly so. We just want to have jobs, contribute to society, raise our families, have a minimum of crime, pay our mortgages, and in general be left the hell alone.

You know… that whole Freedom and justice for all… Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness thing.

The first Presidential candidate that starts running on those basic principals equally applied to everyone will win in a landslide.

The EDD Saga…

I started writing this yesterday, but I was way too worked up to be able to complete it.

The State of California denied my claim for a 2 week period. They were apparently really pissed off that I didn’t mail my claim on time.

This is typical of how California works.

Since I’m part of the group that has been working, contributing, paying my outrageously high taxes, and the outrageous car licensing fees I’m penalized because…

I told the truth!

I misplaced the freaking form.

The EDD never answers their 800 number so I couldn’t even report that I’d misplaced the form or ask for a new one.

In retrospect I should have LIED my ass off. But I’m not wired that way. I don’t think to lie first. Well I guess when dealing with the State I need to get into the habit!

OK fine… California is upset… I was a horrible, rotten, fuckwad and deserve to be punished. And they want their pound of flesh. Whatever…

The real problem is this.

Their letter is ambiguous. It tells me I have the right to appeal their denial. OK! Whatever you mother fucking EDD assholes say!

But due to it’s ambiguity the letter could be interpreted to mean that now all future claims will be denied too.

UHHHH WHAT????!

Now I’m freaking out and PISSED off as all HELL!

See, I have a real problem with “official” documents that are ambiguous. I feel that any documentation should be simple and to the point. The reader should never have to wonder what was meant, what was intended, or if the information applies to them.

The fact that the EDD letter was subject to interpretation left me frustrated.

Am I screwed completely or just a little? What should I do now? How do I resolve this?

Add the fact you can’t get these assholes to answer their phones and… well the walls close in!

Suddenly I felt completely overwhelmed and that I had no recourse or clear instructions to follow. That leads to a deep anger that my brother and I call berserker rage.

This “berserker” probably worked very well in battles of old. It must have worked great when disputes were settled by the swing of a broadsword or a battle ax. Even as the weapons changed it still helped, it gives us unbelievable focus in a fight.

The kind of focus I’m talking about is physical in nature. It’s hunter / predatory  mostly visual and eye hand coordination.

The few physical altercations I’ve been in during my life I didn’t start… I can say with certainty that the    berserker element of my personality finished them. I was the one standing when it was over and people were usually more than a bit shocked at the outcome.

In this bureaucratic world there is no clear enemy. Without a target, the berserker is not particularly useful. In a world of bureaucrats, paper, rules, “not my job” attitudes, where with a keystroke your life can suddenly be made miserable, there is little use for the berserker.

Now, a survival adaptation thats served well for centuries has become a liability. Without a target, the rage that fuels a berserker has no place to go. With no outlet, the rage turns inward and prevents you from thinking calmly and rationally.

It’s a problem that I’m working on. I don’t want to lose the berserker, I just need to keep it reined in when dealing with bureaucrats.

Yesterday, I dropped the reins. As I’m pacing and yelling,

In steps my better half… Quoting Arthur Dent, “I’m English… I know how to queue.” (I was so proud…)

I responded… “I’m German… we invade and impose order.”

6 or 7 phone calls later…. all of them to local field offices instead of the useless 800 number California prints on all their documentation, and we have an answer.

My better half had to tease little bits of information out of these offices. Nothing useful was volunteered and it really was a matter of asking the right questions.

It turns out, I’m only losing the payment for the period in question. I’m supposed to be receiving some additional claim forms which should catch me up.

Why couldn’t that have been clearly written in their letter? Better yet how about including the forms WITH the letter? Then even though the letter itself was ambiguous I’d have been able to figure out what they meant.

During the phone calls we discovered that there are other options to report continued claims. Really?

Apparently, one can phone a claim in, or even use the internet. Both bits of information might have been nice to have. It would have prevented my ever ending up in this position in the first place.

It turns out the EDD website operates differently if you access it using a Mac vs. Windows. The difference is subtle and deadly.

If you use Windows, menu items are visible that are not visible when using a Mac. These menus link you to things like how to set up phone continued claims, how to set up internet continued claims, make information requests, you know… Minor details!

So the major crisis is, for the moment put to bed. The adrenaline rush from being so pissed off and a small sinus problem left me exhausted.

As I was intermittently napping on the couch I was thinking about how California Unemployment Insurance treats the folks that are collecting like we’re on the clock or something.

Folks… IT’S INSURANCE!

That means I’m making a claim, if the claim is valid (i.e. I’m unemployed) then pay me the money I’m due just like any other insurance policy. I don’t see why California sees fit to punish what are effectively it’s customers.

What I can say is this…

I’m angry. I plan to take my FULL measure of payments and benefits out of California and when I’m done I’ll decide my next move.

I’m thinking it’s time to find a new place to live, a new career, and take my earning potential somewhere else.

From the “You have to be Fucking Kidding me” pile

I was a BAAADDDD BOY!

Or so the California Employment Development Department thinks.

A couple of weeks ago I misplaced the form you’re supposed to fill out and mail to them so that you can claim your unemployment payment.

I lost my mind trying to find that damn piece of paper, praying that I hadn’t shredded it by accident and knowing that I couldn’t reach EDD by telephone to ask for a replacement. I was debating if I should go on the EDD web site and try to reopen my claim.

When I did find the form, I immediately filled it out and mailed it with great relief.

Today I get a form letter from EDD that says the want to have a phone interview between 1pm  and 3pm.

OH SO NOW WE CAN TALK ON THE PHONE?

This letter is dated 9/8/2011 and probably didn’t go out until 9/9/2011 & I received it Today… the date of their desired conversation.

They’re very official and apparently concerned about my tardiness.

They printed interview instructions on the back of the letter…

And here is where I’m such a BAAAADDDD Boy! I’m as much annoyed by the poor use of English as I am by the silliness of this whole thing.

During the interview you may be asked some or all of the following questions:

Not mailing you claim form within the required time limits.

When did you mail your claim form?

Why did you send it in after the return date shown on the form?

WTF?

The form always says it is to be mailed on SUNDAY. Really? Since the US mail doesn’t run on Sunday, the form is ALWAYS mailed after the date specified.

As to when I mailed it… well that may be legitimate as a quality control measure to make sure that they’re not losing mail in their mail room.

My points are these…

I know I can’t get EDD to answer their fucking phones.

There is little one can do to communicate with them except by going to one of their offices and spending all day waiting to speak to a representative, who probably can’t or won’t answer your questions.

I have yet to find any information about what one should do if you’re out of the state for more than two weeks, for example if you were driving to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Minnesota, and Texas to attend a number of interviews in those states.

This scenario is quite possible since High Technology companies and workers are LEAVING California as fast as they can. As one of those workers, I have to follow the employers.

This doesn’t even begin to address what one should do regarding any specialized training. For example, I’d like to attend a SCUBA school in Ft Lauderdale, FL. The School is 2 months or more long, how the hell do I file unemployment forms from there?

EDD claims that their electronic payment system is more efficient and cheaper to implement, BUT they are still dependent on the unemployed person physically being at home to file a claim and they’re still sending little pieces of paper.

As usual, California is attempting to SCREW the citizens that have paid for the services. Meanwhile giving free and easy access to those same services to people who have contributed little or nothing to the system.

And the games that they play increase defaults and foreclosures instead of helping Californias stumbling economy.

This is why FOR years I have wanted to get the fuck out of this state. I’ve stayed out of respect and love for my better half. But it’s coming down to a decision between my personal survival and the relationship.

You know what?

I’ll choose my personal survival, EVERY FUCKING TIME.

In most relationships the individuals survival is not at odds with the continuance of the relationship. Since apparently I do have that conflict… perhaps there’s a message there.
