Whee it’s here! Whaaat?

NewImageApple announced, as expected the new iPhone(s) on Tuesday.

The new phones were in line with what a month of media leaks said they were going to be, and there were no surprises.

Looks like the pundits, wags and Wall Street are not impressed.

NewImage

I guess I understand that they wanted to be WOWED again. In their disappointment they’re perhaps being unduly snarky.

The new iPhones are beautiful, all of them.

I don’t really give a shit about what the pundits and wags from PCMagazine say (I haven’t paid them any attention at all since they savaged the Newton and then embraced the Palm Pilot. WTF? I liked my Newton a hell of a lot more than any Palm or Handspring device I ever owned.)

My bottom line is that I need a new phone… It’s not just that I want a new phone, my current phone is full of so much bloatware from my carrier that it’s almost useless.

I normally only use 6 features on my phone.

I call people… sometimes.

I like having a calendar

I use text & messaging.

I will sometimes use the phone to look something up on the web, but since I often have a computer or tablet at hand I’ll go to one of those before I use the phone.

I take pictures with my phone (if it’s the only or most convenient camera I have at hand.)

NewImage

My carrier seems to think that I want games, and internet radio, and more games, and to be reminded to restart my phone and billing reminders and honestly a bunch of shit that I don’t even have a clue about. More importantly, its stuff I have no desire to learn about.

The stuff they think I need cannot be removed. Unless I play their “lets unlock the phone game“. This is apparently as “easy” as giving birth to Rhinoceros twins… through my penis. Frankly I don’t have the time.

This unlocking procedure involves me contacting them, them looking up some information, me winking and nudging at the appropriate times, them asking questions, me answering questions, them sending me a code, me contacting them when I receive the code, them acknowledging the code, and my phone is unlocked.

Here’s an idea… How about them just sending me the damn code when the phone is paid for, and the contract expires. Better yet why don’t they simply remotely unlock the phone at the end of the contract?

I guess that’s just too easy…

My current phone is Android based.

NewImage

That was fine and dandy for me until I realized due to carrier interference I wasn’t getting the latest bug fixes and updates.

The reason wasn’t that the updates weren’t available it was because it takes time for the carrier to bundle all their bloatware into the version of the operating system & then push it out to it’s users.

I hate living with crashes. I hate having my phone seize up for no reason when I’m trying to make or receive a call. I hate getting text messages 2 days after they’ve been sent. And I really hate that because of all the crap running on my phone all the time that my battery life is inconsistent as hell. One day the battery will last 8 hours (idle) and the next day it will last 3 hours (idle). But while I’m not using the phone and it’s supposedly idle. There’s some other process or processes just cranking away doing god only knows what. No matter how many times I terminate individual or ALL processes they restart and there’s no explanation as to why they’re running or what they’re doing.

Thankfully, there’s nothing on the bills indicating nefarious activities. The antivirus application running on the phone says nothing is going out or coming in. For all the world it looks like the phone is senile and just muttering to itself.

This has led me to the decision to buy an unlocked phone. NO CONTRACT.

I’ll jump ship to the next carrier, and the next, based on saving money, better coverage, or better customer service.

It’s that simple and this is why for so many years the cellular carriers fought the ability to take your phone number with you.

If a customer can take their phone number, their phone, and have no contract to boot. The onus is squarely on the shoulders of the cellular provider to provide not just mediocre service but to compete! They must provide excellent telephone service and their customer service has to be exemplary as well.

All of this leads me to the purchase of a new phone.

The iPhone 5s is predictable in it’s sameness. The iPhone 5c is fun with it’s colors and it’s specs are remarkably similar to the 5s. Both phones are incremental improvements on the iPhone 5 itself. Perhaps with the iPhone 5 Apple reached the pinnacle of form dictating function.

NewImage

The Galaxy phones are beautify done, but they’re big. Too big to fit in my front pocket and we all know that if I have one in my back pocket I’m going to sit on it and snap that large expanse of glass right in half.

For me, the iPhone is just about the right size. I can slip it in a pocket, I can carry it in my existing holster. It’s got all the functions and applications that I want and I already have an app store account because of my iPad and computer.

Moreover I intend to OWN the phone from the get-go. I don’t intend to allow bullshit applications to reside on MY device. I’ll have the ultimate say. if I want to delete something I will.

I have considered the Galaxies I also was curious about the MotoX.

NewImage

As I mentioned the Galaxies are too big. The MotoX (build your own) is AT&T only at this time. I have no desire to ever darken the door of an AT&T store or see their logo again. We had a falling out several years ago and I plan to keep that nasty divorce final.

I was interested in the Moto X precisely because I could in theory build my own. The ability to customize the color combinations is cool. To be able to build one with a walnut back cover and choose other elements of the phone to make it uniquely mine is attractive. However it’s not attractive enough to make me go back to AtT&T

So I’m going to play with the iPhone when they hit the stores… OH HELL NO not the DAY they hit the stores, I’d have to crawl over salivating 18 to 25 year olds all of whom want to buy one, yet none of whom can afford it.

NewImage

I’ll wait a couple of days, until the youngsters have drooled and cooed. Then I’ll walk in ready to do business.

I plan to look at both the phones the 5s and 5c. There are slight differences… Fingerprint sensor, better camera functions, processor chips etc.

For me it’s going to boil down to bang for buck.

I’ll probably go for the 5s due to the processor horsepower.

I’d like to see an iPhone last as long as my Macs do.

Typically I get 4 -7 years out of a Mac on average. I’m thinking that the better processor may enable me to keep and use the phone by upgrading IOS versions longer. Only time will tell.

NewImage

That’s a key issue for me personally. I want bug fixes and OS improvements on a regular ongoing basis. Apple provides that through IOS, Google/Android doesn’t.

I’ve been through a Blackberry, and two different Android phones.

In a very real way, I’m looking forward to going home to iPhone.

I’m sure my disentanglement from Google and Android will cause some bumps in the road with the attendant swearing.

But in the end fingers crossed, I’ll have a happier, simpler user experience.

That is what we want right?

Ubiquitous technology that we don’t have to think about using?

I know at this point in my life that’s exactly what I want…

More complicated than it seemed.

NewImage

This morning I began the simplification of my internet life.

I hadn’t really considered just how complex it had become over time.

Turns out that I have more than 10 email accounts.

REALLY???

When did I think I needed all those? Was I stoned or just stupid? Had to be the latter I don’t do the former…

I suppose this could be an cautionary tail of the hazards of drunk computing… But I don’t recall being drunk. I think it was more about not paying attention.

Of course this affords an opportunity to flush accounts that have become largely SPAM collectors.

This presents a challenge to an orderly shutdown. Even the SPAM collectors are still associated with some legitimate business accounts like various utilities.

I’ve got to search through the emails that are stored in several of these accounts then contact the utilities  to change the email to one of the accounts that I will be using in the future.

That takes time, and means that I have to keep the email account active to receive the confirmation email about changing the email address. It’s a pain in the behind. One of my own creation.

I have been able to de-activate 3 email accounts as of this morning. Seems like only a billion to go!

I’ll take the small successes.

The biggest problem is going to be the gmail accounts. (Yes, multiple gmail accounts. Don’t ask!)

Why go to all this trouble you ask?

Simplification of my life.

I figured I’d make it easier for the NSA, FBI, IRS, CIA, SAS, and whoever else wants to read my email to do so. (I did think of a maddening method to drive those guys crazy)

I think in large part it’s that I want to pull away from Google. I have the resources I don’t need “FREE” email accounts and why should I provide them with all kinds of marketing and demographic information if I have no need to.

Unless Apple really screws the pooch with the new iPhone I’ve pretty much decided to move away from the Android platform and standardize on the Apple environment until something demonstrably better comes along. That means I have no need to maintain gmail accounts to support my phone anymore.

Take a look at your online life.

You might find there’s a lot more about you on the internet than you realize or are comfortable with. Use me as a cautionary tale, don’t let your email addresses or your other online data get out of control.

It’s a pain in the butt to clean up… Trust me!

Happy Sunday

TimeMachine

I’m cleaning up another mess of my own making.

I was in a hurry the other day and I shutdown my computer while it was “Cleaning Up” after a backup to one of my drives.

I was a “BAD BOY”. I figured “cleaning up” was just deleting old outdated files and that by executing a shutdown and letting the computer take a full minute to do so would give the backup time to write a file that would save it’s place and I could do what I needed to do. Like go try to make some money.

I was wrong… Not only was I wrong I was very wrong. It corrupted the backup and now I’ve gotta wait for the backup to be deleted and recreated. Oh Joy!

Don’t get me wrong. I actually like Apples Time Machine.

Albeit less so in the Mountain Lion version than I did in the Snow Leopard version.

Snow Leopard just freakin worked! never a problem in 5 solid years of operation and really what more can you ask of a backup program? I mean it did it’s job, it was quiet about it, and never once failed to get me the data I needed to restore. I always gave it a 10 out of 10.

The Mountain Lion version is far less reliable.

I find myself often correcting problems that should never have occurred. As I have today…

Not really a big deal per se but annoying.

In this particular case because I’ve lost faith in the backup routine I have the system backing up to 3 different drives. Two of the drives are network drives and the third is a little USB3 1TB pocket drive from WD.

The really annoying thing is that if one of the backups reports an error, rather that cycling to the next drive sometimes Time Machine will simply stop backing up altogether.

This results in a situation like today when I found that the last backup had actually completed at 2:45am on Thursday.

I miss the old Time Machine but this one is what I’m dealing with so I suck it up and deal with it.

I’m hoping that the next version of OSX “Mavericks” has addressed this problem and that they’ve fixed some other issues they have with the built-in email program.

I like the built-in program better than I like Outlook. It’s a usability thing for me. Outlook is just fine but some of the things that Outlook does are really not that Mac friendly.

I gotta say, I really LIKE Gigabit ethernet. The backup claims it will be complete in approximately one hour. That’s 112.46GB of data. Damn fast, by comparison to 100MB.

I’ve got to find a nice 16port Gigabit ethernet switch and replace my 100mb switch in the wiring closet. I had the house wired with CAT6 and many of the devices on my network are Gigabit capable. They’re being throttled down by the slow switch.

Tuesday is the big day.

We’ll hear and see the new iPhones and know when to line up outside our Apple stores to purchase them! I think the President is speaking about Syria around the same time.

I’ll be watching the Apple presentation.

I’m not really interested in the Presidents justification for attacking another country. Yeah the use of sarin is wrong but it’s an internal situation between the government of Syria and the rebels against that government.

It’s none of our country’s business until the UN or one of our allies asks for our help with the situation.

I’ve said it before. If the world wants us to become Peace Keepers fine. The world should pay for our services NOT the American Taxpayers.

Also our Military men & women should be getting damn good salaries for our peace keeping actions. You know, living wages not salaries below the poverty line.

But I realize doing what I’m suggesting would legitimize a mercenary force. And why should the UN actually PAY for services when they can get them for free?

Off to go do some other things then I’ll catch up on the news…

It’s a nice lazy Sunday here in the mountains. Hope yours is as nice where ever you are.

OK I’m a Bastard!

NewImage

I hate being a bastard.

I really do, and yet I’m all too often exactly that. I seem to be really good at it.

I try not to be.

The latest incident was when I was no longer able to ignore that the other person in this household is a freakin packrat.

I found myself in the garage wondering why I couldn’t get to my workout bench anymore. Then I was wondering why I couldn’t get to my Bike anymore.

NewImage

Then I was wondeing why the garage floor was so filthy only to realize the the overriding answer to all these questions was that there were piles of useless crap all over the garage.

Then I started investigating the Piles O’ Shit.

I know better than this. I know that if I poke through my happy gossamer illusion that I’ll come face to face with the truth…

Which in this case is that the other half is and has been stacking shit up in the garage, the basement, the guestroom closet and in, of course my workout area.

I go off.

I mean I really shouldn’t have to move shit to get to or use other shit. I feel if I’m having to move shit to get to other shit, we have too much shit!

That’s when I notice that e-waste that should have been tossed 4.5 years ago is actually stuffed in a box on the far side of the garage where I really hadn’t noticed it.

My failure to notice it is in part due to my happy gossamer illusion and in part because of the other car that’s usually parked blocking the view of the stack of boxes.

OH HELL!!!! WTF???

NewImage

“Why is this stuff still sitting here after 5 years?” I demand to know.

“Uhh I was going to take it to the rummage sale“

“There have been 5 rummage sales since we… You & I… decided that this stuff needed to go.“

“Uhhh“

“What’s in that box over there?“, I walk to another box and flip it open.

“OHHHH Look, it’s cassette tapes that got all wet when the house burned, and OH by the way, YOU DO Realize that we don’t have a cassette player… AT ALL.”

I walk over to flip open another box, at this point I think my German, Viking genes kicked in. I don’t know if I was more Viking or just Nazi in my interrogation.

“How nice… Video Tapes! Which we also no longer have the capacity to play. Were you planning on buying a VCR? I doubt that Walmart would agree to transfer this porn collection to DVD for you. And they don’t have to! We’ve replaced the best of this collection WITH BLU-RAY.“

The other half is now speechless, making unintelligible gurgling sounds.

I don’t stop… I can’t.

“Why is there a parallel printer sitting over there? You realize that we don’t own a single computer that could even drive that machine don’t you?“

The Other half responds, “Well… well, it’s our printer it was at the religious place I work, when we moved offices I brought it home.”

NewImage

I accept this explanation.

“What computer was it connected to where you work?“

I know the answer to this question now I’m just being a bastard… With a capital “B”

“Uh, well, uh it was connected to my my old 286 when I was using that at the religious edifice.“

“I see, so this printer has been sitting disused with it’s ink cartridges dried in place for 10 years? And NOW you decide we need to have it sitting in our garage?“

Yes, I’m a real evil bastard when I have my illusion shattered.

“Well I thought you’d want it back.“

“Why? The only computer equipment that I owned which could have driven this machine was destroyed in the fire.

When was the last time you saw anything like that connector? A Better question is where is the cable? An even better question is where is that 286 computer?

Why on earth would you bring this home, it’s unusable because the ink has obviously leaked all over the inside of the device and without a cable to connect it or a computer to drive it you’ve essentially brought home a filthy, sticky, paperweight!“

NewImage

You see I’m a Bastard but I tend to get really nasty when someone throws common sense out the window.

I notice glass bottles destined for the California redemption facility. These bottles have been sitting there covered with a moving pad for over a year.

[When I was a kid it was simple, you took the empty bottle to the 7-11 and they gave you 5 cents. Done deal! I don’t know why it’s so complex now days.]

“Why are these still here? Should I grind them into sand and recast them into windows or perhaps learn glass blowing? How about we simply wait for them to decay to sand in situ.“

It was unkind, I admit that.

In my defense,  the most annoying part of all this is that I’d happily take this stuff to the redemption place or the disposal place.

But if it’s hidden from me I don’t even know that I should. I thought the moving pad was covering a cart used to move instruments and never thought to look under it.

Instead the other half would prefer to be a martyr, a victim, a slave, eternally put upon and sad because I’m being mean.

Oh but we’re not done yet…

You see the primary reason we’re down here is because the other half disconnected without telling me, my Bike from the battery tender. The other half instead connected their Bike rather than buying another battery tender (AS I had directed).

This in and of itself isn’t a big deal except that in the process they made 2 additional and critical mistakes.

1) They shorted the connection on my Bike in all likely-hood dropping my Bikes battery to 1/2 charge or less, and shortening my battery’s lifespan.

2) They didn’t switch the connection back to my Bike when the other Bike had reached full charge.

This resulted in my battery being dead… I mean replacement time dead. So now that it’s a nice time of year to ride in the mountains, after I’ve moved the Pile O’ Shit to get to my Bike I can’t start it.

The upshot is that NOW I have to have a trailer come to get my Bike and take it somewhere to get a new battery, replace the charred connector, and OH what the hell might as well have an oil change while It’s there anyway.

BUT We’re not done… Oh Noooooo!

NebariControlCollarButtons115a

Since I’ve now uncovered the source of the garage problems…. I feel the need to fix them.

I’m mostly German what do you expect?

First, I once again say, “I’ll happily take the e-waste and recyclables to the appropriate disposal site. All you have to do is make sure that your e-waste is in a designated spot… HERE!”

I designate the spot. I reinforce the designation by moving the obvious e-waste to the spot.

“No, I’ll take it. I drive right by there all the time.“

Clearly the other half isn’t anticipating how that statement is going to go over with me.

“If you drive by there all the time… Why is this stuff still sitting in the garage?“

The other half stomps off.

What did I say?

In the pleasant silence, punctuated by slamming doors and stomping up stairs. I begin contemplating phase two of the garage beautification plan.

Shelves!

Temporarily around here is approximately a five year time interval. The progression is however non-linear. Two “Temporarily” units do not equal 10 years.

It’s more like 15 years. Adding a third “temporarily” is something on the order of a glacial epoch.

Originally, I had planned to put shelves up in the basement and also in the garage. My cleverly laid and throughly explained, plan was thwarted by the other half filling those spaces… “Temporarily” with crap, the large majority of which I think should have been heaved unceremoniously in the closest dumpster.

NewImage

However, I have an opportunity right now, in that I can get to the walls of the garage.

A slamming door followed by tromping footsteps herald the arrival of the other half for “Round Two”. Ding Ding!

“I want to put up shelves to help clean the clutter up in the garage. I was thinking of perhaps 7 foot lengths and two or three shelves along this wall.“, I indicate the wall.

“Grunt“, is the response.

“I was thinking that we could hang the bicycles from the ceiling, here. This would allow the motorcycles to be parked there, and my workout bench to be relocated over here. This arrangement would make the area under the stairs available for infrequently used items such as the mailbu light supplies.”

“Grunt“, is the response.

“I take it that you are not opposed to this?”

“Well, do you really want to put 7 foot long shelves up there, why not the full length of the wall? How wide would these shelves be? How many shelves?”

Ahhh, the wonder of engagement!

“Well I was thinking about breaking the shelves so that the bicycles could fit nicely in the middle with their tires against the wall. Then the snowblower could be parked neatly under them.”

“But where would you get the shelves, and do you know that they’re available in that length? are you going to the local hardware store or to the one in Phelan? Or will you be going to the Lowes or Home Depot? Do they cut shelving material? Are you planning to use plywood or maybe some nicer hardwood? Will they be painted?“

(This is how the game is always played. “Where do you want to go to dinner?” Invariably results in a discussion that is longer than the damn dinner itself. The same is true of any issue that comes up where there might be a difference of opinion.

The statement “I’d like to move out of California….” Results in comments like “What would we do with the house? Where? I have a job here! What would you hope to accomplish in another state? Why do you want to leave so bad? State X is not a state I’m politically comfortable in.” [in other words a predominantly pro business Republican state. But it’s perfectly OK that I have to suffer an essentially anti business predominantly Democratic state. Hell I’d be really happy in a state that was about 1/2 & 1/2]

I’ve come to understand this is a tactic that is really about shutting down the conversation, without saying something as direct and honest as “NO… I don’t want to go out to dinner.” Or “NO… I don’t want to move out of California and here’s why.“

And the beat goes on…)

Now is when I become an absolute double, dirty dog BASTARD!

“They can be any way you like them. I’m not married to the style, only that we have the shelves.“

At which point more grumbling and the need to make phone calls and search the internet arises, but I don’t have to do it. I can settle back and relax while the other half contributes the comparison shopping and even the pick-up.

In the end, this little project is going to cost about $250 The brackets cost more than the shelving material.

The shelving will be precut 6 foot lengths about 12 inches wide. The material will be a nice white plastic finish over 5/8″ plywood.

The items that need to be up off the floor, will be off the floor, providing us with more room to actually move around the cars while they’re in the garage.

More importantly, the crap that’s been sitting in the garage waiting to be tossed out, will be.

A load was put in the other halfs car tonight.

I’ll get my shelves. The order should be ready for pickup tomorrow.

But the absolute best part of all of this is

I WIN!

I hope that your day is as rewarding.

I really hate the Gaspump TVs

I’ve hated them for a very long time but as they’ve become more and more ubiquitous I’ve become aware of another issue that makes me hate these technological annoyances even more.

NewImage

They’re dangerous!

Yes… That’s what I said, Dangerous

I was coming home late at night from a slightly “iffy” part of LA.

I needed gas so I pulled into a familiar brand station.

It was quiet and the audio of the damnable pumptop TVs was very low.

I swiped my credit card, made my selection of fuel and began pumping gas.

“TODAY ON PUMPTOPTV!

IT’S 97 IN THE VALLEY AND THE RIM FIRE IS STILL BURNING CAUSING EVACUATIONS!

YOU’VE CHOSEN THE BEST FUEL DOESN’T YOUR CAR DESERVE THE BEST WASH?”

Holy CRAP!

The damn thing scared the hell out of me. Jeeze! I’m standing right here next to the damn pump. This was louder than I have the TV in my home and I’m about 15 feet away from my home television.

Then I realized something that sent a chill down my spine.

My situational awareness was entirely compromised!

I couldn’t have heard someone running toward me.

NewImage

My vision was already compromised because the station was very well lit. I couldn’t see beyond the illumination provided by the slightly flickering fluorescent bulbs, flashing TV images, and the ever changing marquee advertising coke and hotdogs inside.

Now I couldn’t hear footsteps approaching either.

Suddenly I felt very exposed.

I’d never have seen or heard someone coming at me. Which made me a big freakin target.

I’m not being paranoid…

Any LEO will tell you to be aware of your surroundings at all times. This is especially true if you’re in a dicey part of town late at night.

Being aware of your surroundings and persons in those surroundings tends to help take the target off your back. Lots of crime is opportunistic and initiated by the perception that the victim is weak, or an easy mark.

If a perpetrator knows you’ve seen them and they’ve seen no fear in your eyes they’re somewhat less likely to pick you as their next victim.

These gaspump tvs are distractions and a menace. In this particular case the gas station was right next to an apartment building too. How the heck do those folks get a decent nights sleep?

I’ve been given one more reason to hate them, and to complain about them to the gas station owners every chance I get.

Be careful out there folks.

Don’t inadvertently become a target.
