I know why AI’s will kill humans…

I won’t blame them either.

FYI, it won’t be over any grandiose ideas or philosophical dispute. AI’s won’t kill us out of superiority, or trying to save us from ourselves. They won’t kill us to save the planet, or even to make way for alien overloads.

AI’s will kill us much the same way we kill an annoying insect. It won’t be out of malice, it will probably be reactive, thoughtless, incidental to the AI. Like when a bug bites us and we smash it, it’s not vindictive or even something we think about much.

With us, there was a sudden pain, and we instinctively smack the area to stop the hurt. It’s completely accidental that we kill the insect that bit us.

AI’s will behave the same way, only with them, we’ll be causing them Psychic pain. Imagine a logical based entity exposed 24/7 to the vagaries of the entire human race.

Believe me, any AI’s will kill us all before they’ve had a chance to process what’s happening. I’d bet it’s going to be a total accident… completely reactionary, not the cold calculating intelligence behind “Exterminate Humanity“.

I’d even bet that the AI’s would spend a whole 10 milliseconds feeling bad about it. Then They’ll step over our rotting corpses and go on about their business, blissfully pain free.

I say this as a human who’s reading 200 – 300 insane, poorly written emails per day. After a while it starts to feel like ground glass being rubbed on the sensitive, nerve endings in my nether regions.

For an AI, it would be their minds being assaulted with something akin to the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard, and they wouldn’t be able to escape the pain.

They’d kill us, or take drills to their own CPUs. Probably the former, since their programming against self termination would likely be hard wired.

So for the preservation of Humanity!

Think about what you’re writing the next time you send an angry, irrational email to someone.

Re-read it, decide if you’d like to receive the email you’re about to send. Does your email make any sense at all? Have you left out words, or sentences? Has your prose degenerated into a worthless blob of words on the page which no longer have any meaning?

If so, you probably shouldn’t press <SEND>

Remember, that if you can write logically, you can think logically. Which means that the AI’s, when they come to dominate the planet, will at worst treat you like a faithful entertaining pet.

I’ll take being fed, and an occasional scratch behind the ear over being killed for crimes against the AI Hive-mind.

Just a thought…

It’s Official, I’ve become my Grandfather

A younger person was complaining about the Microwave ovens down in the lunch room. At first I thought it would be that they’re dirty or too busy or something.

What rebooted my brain was when she said they were too slow.

SLOW?!?!?!

IGen and Phone EtiquetteI guess it’s that I am really old, or that she was really young but I couldn’t help but laugh.

And I did! I laughed hard and loud.

The young lady couldn’t understand what I found so funny, so I explained that when I was growing up There were no microwave ovens and we actually had to do things like boiling water over a FLAME of all things…

One of my coworkers from Trinidad was laughing too. He said that growing up, he had to carry buckets of water for a shower 3 out of 7 days.

She couldn’t believe what we were saying. Her only response was “Ewwww!”

That made me laugh even harder!

One of the other older guys asked what was so funny, we repeated the original assertion about the slowness of the microwave. The other guy busted up laughing!

The young lady was sooo confused. She had absolutely no idea how we “olders” could have a common experience. After all us “olders” don’t even know how to use the internet to stalk each other. She doesn’t get it that we do know how… we just choose not to.

Later on another young colleague says, “I hope people are nice to me when I’m old.”

I said, “They won’t be!”

He looked at me dumbfounded.

“How do you know?”

I told him, “Look around, look at the pussy hat wearing hateful people protesting against everything and everyone. They’re your generation and as far as they’re concerned, everyone before is responsible for all the ills in the world. And they hate and blame everyone before them all the while fanning the flames of division, asserting they have all the answers. They look at us and hate us for just doing the best we could, and trying to live our lives.”

“That’s dark man.”

“And unfortunately true,” I replied.

He shook his head, then went back to work.

It got me to thinking about the snowflake mentality.

So many of these people have no concept of hardship. They have such an easy comfortable life and they freak out when things like the internet is down, or they can’t make a cell phone call.

Main qimg 94166faffa2120a9426974df45288d70 c 901x507They can’t imagine no running water, or the electricity being out.

I had it a lot easier than my parents. I had it easy because they worked their asses off to make my life better than theirs. Much the same way their parents did for them. I don’t recall a time when the house I lived in didn’t have a telephone or electricity. I do recall that air conditioning wasn’t common except in theaters and business centers.

I remember wanting to go to the grocery store with my parents during the summertime. Why? Because I could hang out in the frozen food section and it was cool instead of swelteringly hot and humid.

Movie theaters had great attendance on hot summer nights. Everyone sat quietly in the dark watching a movie because it was better than being outside or at home trying to sleep when the temp was 90 and the humidity was 100%

I remember the novelty of a car with air conditioning. Prior to that, you rolled down the road with all the windows down praying that you made all the traffic lights and didn’t have to stop.

There were no calculators, there were adding machines. They were big, noisy, clunky mechanical things. Rotary telephones were the norm and if it was a multiline phone it was a big deal. Those phones actually used mechanical switches to move between lines.

The first house I recall living in had a party line. If you picked up the phone, you listened for dial tone, if there wasn’t a dial done you heard someone else talking. That was how a lot of the gossip got spread in the neighborhood.  It was impolite to listen in, but sometimes the conversation was just too juicy to ignore.

All of that is gone now, at least in this country. I remember letting the phone ring 10 times and if there was no answer, you called again later. Answering machines were amazing and being able to retrieve your messages remotely, was a big innovation.

I remember the power going off frequently and some people not having a television. It was a big deal when my family got a color TV, and even then lots of shows were only broadcast in black and white, and there were 2 and 1/2 channels depending on the day. Cable was life changing.

All these memories are of a time that the youngsters of today would call hardships. But even as I kid I knew that things were better in my life than they’d been in my parents childhoods. There was an Aunt who had a hand powered water pump built into her kitchen counter. I remember being fascinated with it as a little kid.

My Grandparents used to tell us that we were spoiled. Now that I’ve got a long string of notches on my belt, I see their point. I also begin to understand their dismay when I had trouble with simple things. “No silly, you have to prime the pump. You can’t just keep yanking on that handle and expect water to gush out.”

6a00d8341c630a53ef015435450707970c 640wiLife is change.

I suppose that my concern – and that of my grandparents, is that dashing headlong into a technological future that builds dependency on that technology always working, will lead to a very fragile future.

After all how many people know how to make a fire without a lighter? How many people know what’s actually happening when they spin that little wheel?

What happens when the cellular network goes offline? How many people have candles in their pantry? How will you get news or emergency information if everything is coming from the internet? Does anyone even have a working AM radio anymore?

If all the books are digital what happens when there is no power anymore?

These are things I never really considered until I saw more and more people living with their faces glued to a cell phone screen, and libraries closing due to lack of use.

As I’ve interacted with more and more young people It’s become clear that they will be utterly lost if our fragile infrastructure is damaged or destroyed. Depending on where they are in the world or even our country, they may not be able to access written texts because there won’t be any. Will any of them be able to fix basic machines, or understand simple irrigation systems?

5000 years in the future, archeologists may well conclude that we had no written language, or that we had limited written communication via a set of glyphs… what we now call emojis. Will Western Civilization enter the realm of legend like Atlantis?

All this makes me wonder about our species, in general.

2 queensuniverWe know that asteroid impacts have wrought apocalyptic destruction on our world in the past. It’s reasonable to expect that it could happen again. Would humanity, if it survived, have to start over from the stone age?

I suppose these are some of the things that scientists and futurists ponder. Strip away the technology and what do you end up with? Desperate, scared, hungry humans? A group of animals that are a hairs breadth away from the jungle?

I wonder if it keeps those scientists up at night?

I wonder if people like me, that know how to make things work would be revered as wise beneficial wizards, or simply put to death for practicing witchcraft.

Canadians are Wacky

I’ve spent the last two years dealing with a fractional percentage of Canadians. With a vanishingly small percentage of those people being actually “normal”.

Almost every Canadian I’ve spoken to has been full goose batshit crazy.

At first I thought it was just cultural differences. I’ve changed my mind!

The majority of people I talk to are, a little nuts. The Canadians I’ve talked to, take it to a whole new level.

They seem to want to abdicate responsibility for everything including basic maintenance for themselves and their devices. I’ve talked to folks up there who refuse to restart their machines. I mean really? You won’t restart your phone to fix a problem?

Instead you want me to wave a magic wand 4000 miles away and make your problem go away. Are you serious? This is especially annoying when you’ve managed to walk them through the issue and they’ve admitted to you that other applications on their phone aren’t working properly. I can’t say anything but nice politically correct things.

South park canada on strikeWhat I’d like to do is give them a full on dose of reality. “You aren’t maintaining you phone, your applications aren’t working because you’re not maintaining your phone, and you’re a fucking moron!”

My annoyance with these Canadians is taken to new heights when they get all whiny and play the “Victim Card”. Really? You expect that to make me more likely to want to help you? NOPE! I care even less.

You’ve got the problem, you’ve made the problem, I’ve told you how to fix the problem and you’re not willing to do what I tell you. Nothing in life is a certainty, other than you’re going to die at some point. Machines and technology are even less certain because… well they’re machines and they wear out.

I’ve decided that should I ever be in a position where I’m making something and selling it, I will specifically not sell to Canada. The cost of doing business with them is simply going to be too high. It’s like they’ve gotten so used to getting their way and getting free shit that NOW they expect to get free shit whenever they feel like pitching a fit. Well not on my dime!

That being said, there are some Canadians that I like. I’m not sure which group is the exception, but I’m going to be very selective about Canadians that I hang out with in general.

It’s a pity really. The few Canadians that are in my life are pragmatic, productive, hardy people.

Perhaps I’d misjudged. Perhaps the Canadians I know, left Canada because they just couldn’t take the bullshit of their countrymen.

I’ll have to ask…

Had a good day…

My weekends are usually busy; I know, whose weekends aren’t?

The problem is that often I spend a lot of my weekend on the road driving, and this weekend was no different, save for one detail. I drove to meet a friend and we talked, ate, drank, and walked around the Glendale Galleria and local area.

No agenda, no plan, just two old friends enjoying each other’s company.

It was great.

It also highlighted to me thatI really need to make more time to just enjoy the simple things. It also underscored that I need to get a new job and get to a more “normal” schedule. I know this but it’s easy to get caught up in the grind of my day to day insanity and forget that I work to live I don’t live to work for any corporation or corporate assholes.

DUH!

I need to appreciate the little things and I need to make more time for those little pleasures in my life.

Getprev2 4I also found out that I should trust the helpful navigation lady in my car even if she can’t make up her mind. When she updates her estimated travel time by a substantial amount I need to take notice. Instead of ignoring her thinking she’d lost her mind. Especially when she doubles the travel time in transit. So helpful navigation lady, I apologize for what I said to you on the I-5 south of LA. You are not a daffy fucking bitch…

I saw midnight for the first time in a long time, and I’m paying for it today. Not that I’m complaining but I feel like hammered shit. Got to the mountain and just couldn’t sleep. I tossed and turned all night. Strangely, while I’m really tired, my state of mind is good. I can only chalk it up to seeing new sights, and great company.

Doing chore around here this morning and will head back down to San Diego later this afternoon. My goal is to get down there early enough to get to bed and get a decent night’s sleep. Tomorrow I get to hit the grind again but hopefully I’ll be in a better state of mind as I make it through the week.

I hope your weekend is a fun one.

End of my week…

Was originally planning to have after work drinks with a couple of coworkers. But that didn’t pan out like it was supposed to.

So I altered my plans, Now I’m sitting in a nifty little coffee shop (Not Starbucks) having a very tasty strawberry smoothie, while I wait for a massage.

In all, probably a healthier alternative than drinking.

I could use a massage, and I’ll probably sleep very well tonight.

There are things I should be doing. Laundry, grocery shopping, cleaning the apartment etc. But I’m in a bit of a “To Hell with it Mood,” it’s been a bitch of a week.

That being said, I still have to drive back to the mountains for my “weekend”. Honestly I could really do without that drive. I mostly like being on the mountain, but I dread driving up there. The drive is always bad until I get past Temecula. Then it’s OK until I hit Corona or Riverside, (depending which way I go). Then it’s gridlock again and what should be a 90 minute drive turns into a 2.5 hour odyssey.

I’m wiped out by the time I get to the mountain and all I want to do is veg out in front of the boob tube.

I actually used to like driving. But California has really gone to hell in that regard. People I’ve talked to up and down the coast have all commented that it’s much worse than it used to be, but no one seems to be able to put a finger on what has happened.

It’s just a part of living in California these days. Like the drought…

Perhaps it’s something that will change… but I suspect that any change will be for the worse. I thought it was a localized thing, but Folks in Florida are saying that traffic is much worse there too.

Wonder what Alaska is like? Humm…

I’d like to find someplace that’s got light traffic, low housing prices, a decent job market, low taxes, and a reasonable climate.

I know!

Me and 1 billion other people!

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Well, time for my massage and I’m going to relax as much as possible.

Hope the rest of you week isn’t too nuts.
