9 Hours of sleep

That was different.

9 Hours, dreamless, uninterrupted sleep. That’s some kind of record for me, at least over the past few years.

I went to bed last night feeling poorly; something sinusy… I was expecting to be up & down all night but as it turned out being asleep was apparently what I needed once my body turned off it stayed off. Nice change!

DistractionsJust got up, trying to decide what to do today. I need to keep sorting and tossing junk but I’m honestly not much up for it.

It’s been just about a week since the move was finished. I haven’t accomplished nearly what I wanted to and I’ve got to press on. That doesn’t imply that my heart is in it.

I’m thinking I might be a little depressed, there are many tasks and each is daunting. I’m having trouble just choosing one to execute on. It’s easier for me to lose myself in little distractions, rather than chip away at the bigger tasks.

Well, off to attempt to get something accomplished.

Time to start scanning and shredding

Finally getting through the mess in my office.

Stacks of paperBelieve me, it’s a mess! Lots of mail that I just didn’t have time to deal with over the past 3 years. Most of it is shreddable without spending too much time on it. Some of it though is stuff that needs to be really paid attention to or stored.

On the plus side I can play music or watch some of the porn collection while I’m doing this mostly mindless task. Scanning is slow and tedious. Statements and stuff like that isn’t printed in a way that makes for easy conversion to digital storage methods.

But the tedious task is worthwhile because I can reduce the clutter in the office and make things easier for me to concentrate on the things that I need to get taken care of.

You know, minor things like Job searching, writing and other projects that I want to do. Plus, right now if I were to try to do a video interview I couldn’t because there’s no “Professional” background that doesn’t look like a hoarders home.

So the music or porn keeps me entertained without focusing my entire attentions like a movie would. After all you pretty much know what happening in a porn movie. Most of them aren’t long on plot even if they’re unbelievably long in other ways.

That’s over!

As I’ve stated, I hate moving.

However I’m out of the San Diego area. Getting out was not without its difficulties. But A Great friend helped me out in so many ways.

I haven’t been sleeping well in the run-up to this move but last night was an all time low for me. maybe one hour of solid sleep, and 4 hours of fitful 10 or 15 minute naps.

Then we were up at dawn, disassembling the remaining furniture and packing final items. Yipee!

By the time we were able to start loading the truck it was already getting hot. By the time we were done we were both wet from sweat and tired.

It took a while for me to turn in the keys to the apartment and even longer at Cox cable to turn in the cable modem. 35 minute waits to turn in equipment? Really? Come on Cox get it together!

It took me almost an hour to finally hit the freeway by which time my Friend was within 30 minutes of the storage facility.

I was freaking out. Then a nice calm seem to fall over the San Diego drivers suddenly space opened up and I could fly.

What I didn’t know at the time was that my friend had been taken on a wild goose chase by his phone navigation lady and the storage facility had developed a leak in the storage unit I’d rented.

When I pulled into the facility, my friend had just started unloading stuff into the new unit and all I had to do was sign some paperwork. 1.5 hours later we were locking the door and heading to drop-off the truck.

So that pain is finished. Now I’m planning to do absolutely nothing for at least the next couple of days.

Hell, I might not even get out of bed!

From what my body is telling me right now… I might not have much of a choice.

I’m looking forward to getting at least a few decent hour sleep. If I’m really lucky… I might get a good solid 8 hours. I’m not holding my breath mind you, but the thought has crossed my mind that this, right now is actually the beginning of my off work downtime.

Endings / Beginnings

My time in San Diego is drawing to a close. Approximately T-minus 6 hours.

When I first came here I thought it was a nice place and the place is picturesque when you get to the coast. In all the years I’ve spent in California I’d spent very little time in San Diego and that was always as a visitor.

I came here with high hopes of restarting a career and making something of the opportunity.

I found out this area is a hard place to meet people and that the job market is not the best. In that it’s much like the rest of California but San Diego has something else. It’s hard to put into words, its like there’s a standoffish attitude. Perhaps it’s because of the strong military presence. Perhaps it’s something else entirely. The practical reality is that it’s difficult to get to know anyone because everyone is on the move, myself included.

This city feels like everyone is just passing through. No one, it seems wants to make attachments of any kind. One of the things that caught my attention was how many people park nose out.

You’ll see this in shopping malls, businesses, and apartment parking. It’s as if everyone is preparing to leave, even when they’re at home. The shopping malls and businesses amazed me, people will back in to parking spots regardless of how many other people they slow down in the process.

I’ve seen traffic jams caused by person after person backing into spots at their place of work. They’re completely oblivious to the fact that their actions were causing the problem. At work I’ve heard people say they didn’t understand why there was a jam up at the entrance to the parking lot every morning.

It speaks to a blindness about consequences of your actions. It’s a delusion shared by more than a few people here.

While I will miss having my own space. I won’t miss San Diego. There are nice people here, and there are some damn good people here, they’re very hard to find, but they’re good people.

So I have mixed emotions about leaving here only because I liked living on my own.

San diego trafficI won’t miss the crowds, traffic, noise, or Comic con… Not one little bit.

It’s been a couple of weeks since the layoff. I’m still tired as hell and occasionally a little blue, there’s a feeling that I and my colleagues were all used and then thrown away. I’m not looking forward to sweating over finding a new job full time.

But this “Ending” is a “Beginning” too.

That’s what I’m reminding myself of as I box the last of my stuff here.

I’m putting things into boxes and storage as neatly as possible with the intent that I’ll begin again, somewhere else.

Call it hope.

Comiccon foot trafficI do know that, long distance commutes are out of the question in Southern California. They used to be possible but those days are long gone. Where ever I end up working, I’ll probably have a small apartment nearby. Ideally, I’ll have an actual home that I’m earning equity on. But houses nearer the working centers of any city in this country, much more-so in the state of California, are beyond expensive for what you get.

I don’t know what the future holds for me, but I have at least a little hope.

I’m planning to take some time for myself, maybe a week or two where I can just turn my brain off, have a little fun and relax. I need to go walkabout and see some things I either haven’t seen before or revisit some things or places that I’ve enjoyed in the past.

Then I’ll tackle the business of looking for a new job, cleaning up around the house and working toward defining and building a future that I want.

I know it’s all up to me, but I question if I have the strength at this age to pull off reinventing myself and defining the future I want.

We’ll see.

Wow utilities can be a pain to deal with.

Contacted Cox Cable this morning to arrange for disconnect. I’m glad I didn’t do that earlier It would have bushed me over the edge a week ago, in terms of them not getting it right the first time. The

However, today it was an annoyance, nothing more.

I told the Rep that the disconnect should be effective on Aug 19th

10 minutes later my cable and internet are down. Great! Not what I asked for. At the point that this happened I was on the phone to SDG&E (San Diego Gas & Electric) arranging the disconnection of that service.

No worries, the Rep at SDG&E was pleasantly efficient and understood what I was doing. She scheduled things to be effective on the 20th. Perfect!

I call Cox Cable back. This time I got someone who had a brain. She fixed things, 1 hour later Internet and cable were back on. I want to keep the internet at least through the weekend.

Many things still to do, but this is wrapping up. I’ll be ready for Monday.

Tonight, I’m going to relax, get some sleep and just clear my head.
