I broke the rules of Dinner parties

Yep,

Over the weekend I spoke of… Horror of Horrors !

Politics!

Thankfully it was at the end of the party not the beginning…

NewImage

Several guests were talking about the food labeling proposition that’s been getting a lot of air play here in California.

The gist of the proposition is that genetically modified foods should be labeled. But then the proposition goes on to exclude some foods and require labeling on others even if there “might” be a component used in the food that was derived from a genetically modified source.

I’m against this proposition, and my reasoning is simple. Either you identify ALL genetically modified foods or don’t bother. No exceptions, no exclusions, mandate an all or nothing approach.

In my mind, It’s probably not a bad idea to give the consumer a choice to eat genetically modified foods or not, you can do that with labeling.

Sacramento in my opinion, was going to use the proposition to create another new administrative nightmare that would have been a “California Only” thing.

In the process they’d create another revenue stream for the politicians to waste. Oh and of course… they’d have created the potential for food shortages similar to gas shortages and obscene pricing, because the food in the OTHER 48 states wouldn’t be compatible with the regulations imposed by California.

Then they asked about the presidential choices. In my head there were warning klaxons… Even a guest appearance by the Lost in Space robot, “Danger Will Robinson! Danger!”

I plowed ahead…

At this late date I’m still unsure which way I’m going to vote on the presidency.

NewImage

I don’t think President Obama is the way… and at the same time I really don’t have great feelings for Governor Romney.

My reasoning is this, President Obama is today and honestly I believe has been a lame duck during his entire Presidency. With Congress refusing at every turn to work with him, he’s not been nearly as effective as he could have been. Even his good ideas for the country get no traction because no matter what, Congress is going to fight about it.

The other liberal Democratic guests at the party swarmed me like sharks. I was amazed. They wouldn’t let me finish a sentence.

These otherwise intelligent people, were so incensed that not only did the conversation stop, it degenerated to a level just above name calling.

WOW!

I thought the Republican Conservatives were the ones that frothed at the mouth and refused to hear dissenting opinions!

Obviously I’m living in the past.

I thought that decorum and politeness dictated that you at least listened to someone else’s opinion and let them finish their statement. I try to do this and while I am passionate about some things I really try to hear the other side.

Apparently, that’s not the way Americans work today.

If you disagree… You’re to shout the other party down! That way you don’t have to be confused by the logic of a well reasoned argument against your preconceived beliefs.

One of these same people (Again, intelligent, well educated, older people) said the following which still has me reeling.

“I’d rather have another four years of a stalled economy with Obama, than a working economy under Romney.“

WHAT?!?!?!?!

I suppose that’s easy to say if you’re already retired.

But that’s a really bad idea if you’re one of the people who still needs to work.

That kind of thinking really disturbs me.

It’s also indicative of the partisan politics that has crippled Washington and our ability as a people to control our politicians.

The thing that people seem to have forgotten is that we and our politicians, need to think outside ourselves.

We should be thinking about what is best for our nation, not our party, not our ethnicity, not the GLBT people with one blue eye and one green eye.

We all need to step back and act in the best interests of all Americans.

That may mean some of those Americans won’t have their special interests seen to immediately. And that’s the price you pay for the relative freedoms we have in this country.

NewImage

Do you think the Tuskegee Airmen were thinking about how unequally they were being treated in the armed forces and the nation when they fought in World War II?

Sure they were, BUT They were Men enough and American enough to realize that sometimes the bigger picture really is more important!

At a time when Black people had to sit at the back of the bus, and there were White Only restrooms and water fountains. These MEN stepped up put those issues aside and fought to protect this country. I can only assume that THEY saw the potential in our nation.

I’m totally in favor of the repeal of DOMA, I’m also in favor of allowing same sex marriage. I don’t think that Same Sex marriage should be a new law, I think it should be a simple enforcement of the logic of equality and freedom that we’re already supposed to have.

I believe that Independent civilian investigations should happen in Washington to determine just how deep the corruption goes and to start proceedings to root out the influence corporate America has on national politics.

Am I willing to STOP the country until these things happen?

HELL NO!

Because that would lead to untold numbers of people being out of work, and with those people being out of work their children conceivably go hungry, they default on their homes and become a big drag on an economy that’s already stumbling.

And in my opinion… taking any action that stops the economy, is unethical, and immoral.

Of course the guests circling me like sharks weren’t at all interested in my reasoning.

Nor were they interested in this thought.

If Romney is elected and the economy improves, we have anecdotal proof that the country is in fact controlled by large corporations.

We also know which politicians are the puppets of those corporations because they would be the very same group that fought to make President Obamas policies fail.

Which gives We The People viable targets.

Over the next four years, We The People must vote those politicians out of office.

We The People must demand accountability and investigations into potential corruption within our government up to and including impeachment of any and all officials tainted by corporate special interest and control.

This will not be a simple process, nor will it be a quick one. But it is a necessary process if we want a government that is Of and For the people again.

Of course… the alternative is to do nothing.

Which means that thePresidential election has lost all meaning.

If the election process continues to be essentially a 50% / 50% split, that means that neither candidate or party is offering anything the people can rally behind.

How long can any country survive with it’s political process in neutral?

Wow! Who didn’t see that coming?

Lance Armstrong’s luck is nothing but bad these days.

I personally don’t think it’s right for him to be stripped of titles dating back to 1999.

NewImage

That is the same year by the way that the United States Anti-Doping agency was created.

I suppose the USADA needed to have a trophy on their wall and they decided that Lance Armstrong would do nicely.

I look at the almost 13 year investigation as a nothing but a witch hunt.

After all if you went back 13 years into a lot of folks pasts you could find evidence of drug use.

If we threw out all the actors, sports figures, business people, senators, and members of congress who’d had drugs, or been treated for drug abuse, or were still using during the past 13 years…. well television and the halls of the government would be a lot emptier.

The thing I find most interesting is that quick search of statute of limitations on drug possession in a random sampling of states is anywhere from 2 to 5 years.

Even in Colorado where the USADA is based… the statute of limitations is 10 years so why didn’t they just let it go?

Armstrong has been retired from the Tour de France since 2009. And… they didn’t find any evidence of him doping IN 2009! Of course Lance didn’t win in 2009 so they probably weren’t looking too hard!

It doesn’t matter to me if Armstrong did it or not. I’ve never watched or much cared about the Tour de France or any cycling races for that matter.

What bothers me is that you have an independent agency that was ANYTHING but impartial. The USADA apparently kept subjecting samples from Lance Armstrong to better and better testing and analysis procedures, with the intent to find something amiss. It’s almost a given that if you go into a situation expecting to find something… you will. (Check out youtube and look for UFO videos!)

I was reminded of the old inquisition techniques to identify a witch.

Tie the arms and legs of the suspected witch and throw them into a deep body of water… If they floated then you retrieved them and burned them at the stake. If they didn’t float well… you were wrong, they weren’t a witch and now they’re with God.

NewImage

It’s pretty obvious that the USADA is nothing more than a Grand Inquisitor who is determined to find something wrong.

So the lesson to any of you budding Cyclists, Triathletes or Olympic hopefuls is this…

DON’T WIN!

Mediocrity is King now and we have the agencies to ENFORCE IT.

Firefox you have to be kidding!

Due to a banking issue, I just downloaded and fired up the newest version of Firefox.

Firefox

I’ll grant you it’s been a long time since I used the product. I’ve been using Safari quite happily for many years now.

However since my financial institution has seen fit to not make their online bill pay application compatible with the default browser installed on every Mac running Mountain Lion (The newest OS from Apple) I’ve had to resort to loading yet another browser so that I can access the banking web site that I’d been using for years.

Of course the bank also completely changed their site (for my convenience, and security) which is part of what caused the problem in the first place.

So now I’m looking at Firefox, I’ve already stumbled across something that I and apparently a lot of other people REALLY don’t like.

When you open a new tab, you get to see a list of your top sites. Safari does this too but you can turn it off and simply have it open a new tab that displays your selected home page.

In my case that page is Google.

Apparently in Firefox you can’t.

Yes, you can hide the top hits, but opening a new tab simply gives you a blank page.

If you’d like to have your home page displayed, you have to download and then of course maintain one of Firefoxes extensions/apps.

REALLY????

These guys actually thought that was a good solution?

Window

Wow…

Usually, when I open a new tab, it’s because I WANT TO SEARCH the web. Therefore opening to a Google search page makes all the sense in the world. After all If I want to open a bookmark, or a link on a displayed page I’ll hit the right mouse button or control click.

If I’m opening a blank tab… it’s because I’m expecting to do a search. And NO that little bullshit text entry field on the upper right hand portion of the page isn’t what I want to use or even see.

From the information I’ve been able to gather doing searches ON THE WEB… This change has been an issue for at least the past 10 months

REALLY?

In 10 months they couldn’t be bothered to add a simple Case statement that said

Top_Sites ==0

New_Tab==homepage

Instead they want everyone to add bloatware to the browser to get something that virtually everyone had come to rely as default behavior.

WOW! The arrogance of developers truly knows no boundaries.

I guess it’s just my lot in life…

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I’ve been a technology guy for almost 30 years.

Now I’m unemployed and have been looking for a new job for the better part of 18 months.

Usually I can’t get the time of day from the places that I apply to. Those placement firms that do contact me are often not much more that one step above spammers.

Got a call from one of these guys the other day, He was obviously Indian and his English pronunciation was so poor that I had no idea what he was saying. I finally got him to send me an email with the job description. His written English was only marginally better, which explains why he was trying to match me up with a position that was almost completely NOT anything I can do.

I find myself wondering things like why can’t I get any decent leads.

I’m still working on that one… but I’m beginning to wonder if I’m not paying back some seriously big karmic debt.

Many of the companies that I’ve applied to, I also do occasional business with. This morning I was looking around online for a decent six or seven port USB Hub.

As I wandered through the myriad websites I kept seeing one defect after another.

These are major, nationally known companies who advertise and sell their products on the web and yet I was seeing things like;

Dead links,

Typos,

Dialog boxes that were blank, (I mean… just a white box with nothing in it.)

Check boxes that appear unchecked yet if you do check them, to narrow your search you actually destroy your search results.

Oh, and these companies… all have either flat out told me that I wasn’t good enough to work for them, or they simply have never responded to my inquiries.

While I many not be good enough to work for them, clearly their existing staff sucks!

Part of the problem is this.

Feseminar

All of these companies want someone that has long list of software development methodology certifications. To date I’ve worked with virtually every methodology.

However, I’ve never bothered to get certified in any of them, for the following reasons;

1) The certifications are very expensive and often required me to burn my vacation time and pay for the seminar and the hotel & food costs. Often as not just sitting through the seminar got you the certification.

I don’t believe in buying certifications. If that’s what I’m doing… then let me send you the $1000 and you send me the paper with my little name printed on it, and we’re done.

I think that there should be something a little more structured and some accountability or grading must be built into the system.

Then there’s this thought… I have one miserable week of vacation. Do I spend it at an expensive seminar in a hotel conference room or do I spend that week on a beach somewhere? Let’s think about this for all of a nano-second! If I’m going to spend my vacation time and have to pay for a hotel and transportation… I’m going diving in the Caribbean!

2)  These methodologies are ever changing and in fact I’ve worked for companies where the methodology changed as frequently as the upper management did. It was simply impossible to keep up with the method du jour and as a result, the certifications were pretty much pointless.

3) These methodologies claim in some circles to be a standard. But in point of fact they are really only the framework of a software development philosophy that allows for variable implementation based on the needs, desires, and whims of the corporation where the method is being used.

The practical upshot of this is that a new employee starts out having to learn how the company has implemented a particular methodology whether they’ve got the certifications or not.

4) I have noticed through the years that regardless of the published “Methodology”, corporate “Procedures”, or even ISO standards all go right out the window when the project is late,  (Every Software Project ends up being LATE). Which means that Agile is pretty much the defacto standard of ALL software development regardless of the corporate sales pitch.

5) I’ve actually been involved in companies where the process was so complex that it actually impeded the development and testing processes. In these companies, I only got 3 hours of work done on software I was testing per day. The other 5 or 6 hours of my day were spent in meetings, explaining what testing was being done and WHY the testing was going so slowly.

REALLY?

In point of fact it wasn’t the methodology, it was the implementation.

I’ve always thought it was funny how almost anything begins to take on the worst aspects of religion. Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Agile,SCRUM, PC vs. Mac, iPhone vs. Android…

None of them are inherently bad ideas or philosophies but all of them suffer from problems introduced by zealots.

I guess now it’s time for me to pay for some stupid seminar where the badge of honor is that I have a certificate saying I sat through the seminar.

At least I could legitimately say I’m certified in one of these things…  That 30 years of experience is irrelevant but a silly certification in a software development methodology is annoys me beyond belief.

4246303 683742 cocktail a mix of various drinks sometimes alcoholic drinks

I could take my laptop and spend the time writing and half listening. God! The soul crushing boredom  of seminars like this makes me cringe. When I’ve attended these kinds of seminars in the past,  at the end of the day I headed straight for the hotel bar and worked on anesthetizing myself… All the while having to listen to other folks from the seminar gushing about the importance of the words of the presenter… aka The Prophet.

Meanwhile, I’m looking for the nearest exit and wondering if I can find another convenient bar where I don’t have to listen to a rehash of the day faithfully regurgitated by those who’ve drunk the kool aid.

I suppose it’s jaded cynicism on my part. A large part of my inherent resistance comes from knowing these methods, don’t make me a better tester. It just means that I’m going to be better able to recognize when someone is wasting time in needless meetings.

Which leads me back to Karma…

Am I now paying the price for not drinking the kool aid? Are the errors I’m seeing on web sites the not so subtle reminders that my choice not to play the latest corporate mental masturbation game has left me on the outside?

I still stand 100% by my conviction that as a Software Quality Assurance Analyst, knowledge or lack thereof about these philosophies won’t change the quality of the software.

Actually testing the software will.

My Karma is to be unable to ignore software defects, and to seemingly bring out defects simply by wanting to use software as a normal user.

I guess, I was a serious asshole to someone in a previous life.

Now where was that catalog of obscenely priced seminars????

I was planning to send a blog earlier today

OOOPPPPS!

I was thinking about the blogs,  then I was kind of random, then I started to write something and instead upgraded to a new dive log program. Such has been my day.

I’m waiting for the swelling of my toe to go down.

IMAG0267

Yesterday I smacked my big toe on the stairs and thought I’d just ripped the nail off. This morning the blood was a lot easier to clean up and of course my eyes weren’t watering either.

The damage isn’t nearly as bad as it looked last night.

But there’s pain/stiffness in the joint and a little swelling. So I’m taking it easy today.

I don’t think I broke anything but I damn sure smacked the hell out of it.

It’s a wonder I didn’t fall the whole way back down the stairway. I think I damaged my wrist too as I caught myself. My right hand and wrist are puffy… Uh oh! I guess I’m going to be cheating and using my left hand tonight!

The foot doesn’t hurt too much unless I move too fast or twist when I’m walking. Right now it’s just a dull ache as long as I don’t walk around too much.

I will say this… if anyone ever tries to do a murder investigation around this house they’re going to find my blood all over the place… Lately it seems I can’t do anything around here without drawing blood.

I guess I won’t be dancing over the next couple of days.

Maybe I’ll just put the drill and hammer down until there’s someone around who can call 911 if I do something really stupid!

Nahhh I gotta get some stuff finished before the weekend.
