I’m over being in the middle of a construction zone

DSC 0563

I’m tired of being trapped in the house.

I’m tired of the house shaking and the dust.

I’m over the constant growling and “Beep”,  “Beep”,  “Beep”,  “Beep”, “Beep”, “Beep”,  “Beep” of the trucks, steam shovels, and bulldozers.

I’m sick of all of this and I swear to you I think this is all because some people in the town council were inconvenienced one summer by the road washing out. So they whined at the county and sentenced ALL of us on the “low rent side of town” to having our summer, our fall, and now the holidays disrupted.

After all why should they care? This construction isn’t in their back yards. Well you bastards… it IS in my back yard, literally!

I’ve given up straightening the pictures on the walls. I’m spending a large portion of my day comforting the dogs who freak out when the house shakes like we’re having a 2.0 or better earthquakes.

DSC 0572

And then there’s the pure annoyance factor!

I didn’t move 80 miles OUT of the big cities of LA and Orange counties so that my house could be smack in the center of a construction zone.

They said they’d be done by Thanksgiving…

It’s damn near Christmas and they’re showing no signs of being near done.

6 days a week, 10 hours a day. Dawn to dark, they’re not even leaving enough time to walk the dogs (or myself).

This is really starting to get to me! I keep thinking it might be more quiet in a one hour hotel room with a crack den next door in the middle of Hollywood.

Plus the fact that these guys have no clue about how to deal with snow or ice. Hint: Clear the snow off the road before you drive 20 ton trucks on it. Then you won’t need the thing that looks like a blowtorch to melt the compressed ice so that your trucks can keep going without slipping.

We won’t even talk about the damage done to the road.

You know, the road that residents ponied up the cash to install, the one the county demands use of, but will not maintain, repair, or send a snow plow up?

Yeah, that road!

All the damage is new and caused by these folks driving vehicles they know are too heavy up and down in front of my house.

Yeah, I’m sick of all this crap!

I wake up every single day and wonder if this is that day I list this house for sale and leave!

This shit has completely destroyed the quality of life up here.

Saturday and today are the worst in a long time.

It’s hard to concentrate. You can’t watch TV or a movie because the noise is so loud you have to have the sound so high it’s uncomfortable just to hear a show over the noise outside.

Try doing a telephone job interview!

It sounds like you’re homeless, living on the streets because you can’t find a quiet place ANYWHERE in your own home to have a conversation.

I understand now why people snap!

OK I’m a little pissed off.

NewImage

Been sitting on this one for a while may as well let ‘er rip!

I don’t get out much. I have few friends, & I generally am exactly where I’m supposed to be when I’m supposed to be there.

Recently, a couple of incidents have occurred where I wasn’t at the beck & call of my other half, and all hell broke loose!

The first was when I was helping out with stocking and organizing at a retail establishment owned by a friend. The second was a week or two ago.

The first incident, I was in a seriously crappy cell service area. You’d have thought I was an Alzheimer’s patient or a Megan alert had been issued.

I’m still hearing about it from acquaintances that got called REPEATEDLY because OOOHHHHHHH I was gone for 4 hours.

The second incident…

I’m at the freakin neighbors! All my vehicles are at home. Obviously I’m on foot and probably hadn’t gone far. In the end the other half found me with ease!

NewImage

I had dinner & drinks and adult conversation with the neighbors.

We were chatting, laughing, and having one of those rambling discussions that is a whole lot of fun. YES! We talked about sex… and POLITICS!

My other half called at freaking midnight. I didn’t hear the phone.

The Neighbors & I were listening to music and having an impassioned political discussion. There’s a knock at the door, My other half has stomped over to give me the stink eye and basically harsh EVERYONES buzz.

I honestly don’t know what the fuck I did wrong.

OOoOOppps I didn’t hear the phone ring OMG! It’s a crime!

NewImage

Unlike the other half, and many other rude people I know, I don’t typically answer the phone to talk to a person on the phone, when I’m having a conversation with another person in real life.

I’d decided that I was going to be calm and just have a conversation about what was driving this; to y mind insane behavior.

When we had that conversation the other half fell on their own sword. It wasn’t like I could beat the subject any further but I do wonder whats driving this bit of crazy.

As I said, i don’t go anywhere, I have few friends. The friends I do have are busy with their own lives and social events so it’s not like I’m cheating or anything.

NewImage

And even if I was, who cares? For the 25 years we’ve been together, there has never been any prohibition against having a little fun outside the relationship as long as the rules were obeyed.

From day one I’ve been very honest about the fact that I absolutely refuse to be contained, chained, or controlled.

The bullshit line “I was worried” ain’t holding water.

I’m a fucking adult male.

I’m an apex predator, and you know what? When I was driving 92 fucking miles one way to work I never got this “I was worried bullshit”. Nope never!

NewImage

Apparently, sitting in traffic 6 hours a day is ok. You know where I could have been in an accident, or shot, after all I was driving through Compton, none of that raised a fucking eyebrow.

But now if I’m not sitting in this fucking house 24/7 it’s cause for panic and honestly what I think of as the height of rude behavior.

This shit has got to stop.

I can’t even imagine what things are going to be like if I’m traveling for work or a book signing or whatever.

I have no doubt it will be interesting.

The question is, will it be so interesting that I decide I’ve had quite enough?

Time will tell.

Lies! more Lies!

NewImage

I wasn’t going to comment any more on this Obamacare debacle but each day there are yet more revelations that just cannot be allowed to pass.

In addition, yesterday I got the letter I’ve been waiting for.

My other half got a similar letter last week describing that their group policy was being cancelled as well. We’re both scrambling to figure out if it’s better for us to have separate policies or to combine our coverage.

Apparently, our insurance policies are so called “Crap” policies according to wondrous Obamacare.

I’ve got time until my policy is gone, and I have to figure out what to do.

I spent some time on the phone with the insurance company and I found out a couple of interesting things.

NewImage

The first is that MY PPO plan may not allow me to go to my Doctor of many many years because he’s in a different county and therefore in a different provider net called EPO.

The implication being that unless you’re very careful you could find yourself having to see only physicians, specialists, and going to hospitals that are in your county if you don’t have compatible provider networks.

I told the lady at the insurance company that if my choice was to go to my doctor OR to have insurance… I choose my doctor, I’ll pay out of pocket, insurance be damned.

NewImage

How does restricting my coverage to a specific geographical area benefit me? Would I have insurance coverage if I was traveling out of state?

I’ve written before about my preference for doctors whose First language is English.

I have vivid memories of waiting in my Kaiser hospital waiting room in Fontana believing I was having a heart attack, and not hearing a fucking word of English. NewImage

I might as well have been in a hospital in another country. Then when I finally got to see a Doctor (if that’s what he was) I couldn’t understand him due to an unbelievable and unintelligible heavy accent.

He finally called a nurse in who explained in Spanish what was going on.

My Spanish is poor at best, but since I have some scientific grounding I was able to “get” most of the medical stuff that she was talking about  because I remembered the rudimentary Latin I’d learned as a kid.

Really?

My only choice was to rely on my understanding of a dialect of Spanish that she wasn’t speaking (Mexican versus Castillian) and routing the medical jargon through a dead language?

My Kaiser plan was cancelled the very next day!

I paid out of pocket for medical care until open enrollment at my company, then I went PPO.

There are those who would say I’m racist.

I disagree! I’m about survival!

If I can’t understand what the doctors or nurses are even saying how can I possible be engaged in my medical care?

If I don’t understand their instructions how can I comply?NewImageWorse, if these folks don’t understand my complaint how the hell can they make a diagnosis?

This is still America, like it or not The Defacto spoken language is English.

I don’t think it’s racist at all for me to insist on speaking the language of my birth, the language I was taught in school, and the language printed on all the streetsigns.

I’m even less charitable when it comes to medicine. The wrong shit, taken the wrong way

CAN KILL YOU!

Now it looks like PPO no longer has the advantages it once had.

NewImage

It looks like I’m not alone in discovering a certain “Regionality” to the coverage plans. Reports are cropping up of hospitals and doctors being excluded from networks. Ostensibly this is a cost cutting move. The reality is far more sinister.

If I’m on a Bronze plan, then presumably I’ll be limited to Bronze plan network providers. If I’m on a Gold plan, I’ll be limited to Gold plan providers.

Dollars to doughnuts those lines and restrictions will draw rather stark lines between rich & poor.

The practical application of this could mean that all the poor folks from South LA get sent to Martin Luther King Hospital, which in recent years was on the verge of being closed due to inferior care. The rich folks in the gold plan will be sent to Cedars Sinai.

You want to talk about something hideously wrong? There’s your talking point. Wasn’t Obamacare supposed to be egalitarian?

NewImage

Obamacare in it’s current implementation lends itself to government sanctioned and enforced Classism.

Taking that thought to an obscene conclusion… Obamacare could enforce and create an underclass of people for whom inferior medical care will be the norm. A “Worker Class” if you will.

The most frightening thought is that this system eventually creates a dystopian world of “haves” and “have nots”.

The “have nots” are disposable and always underperforming because their health problems will be greater in number.

They’ll be absent from their jobs more. Their survival rates after an accident will be lower than their wealthier counterparts.

Leading to elites asking, “ Why spend a lot of time or money training them, they burn out like lightbulbs and are replaced just as easily. ”

I doubt we’ll see this in the next 10 years but what about the next 50? We already have people on both sides of the political aisle who’re telling the American people in effect “ We’re better educated than you. We know whats best for you.”  NewImage

You could argue that to some extent we have this classism now. You’d be right.

However, hospitals must take anyone in an emergency today. A person who needs specialized care, even on the lowest tier of a “Crap” insurance plan typically is allowed to go to the hospital where they can obtain the care they need.

They pay their insurance deductible and 20%, 30% or 40% of the treatment bill and that’s it. Yes there’s a financial hardship component to this system, there is no denying it.

Being OUT OF NETWORK means that even with insurance, I still have to pay 100% of the specialist bill. This is not an improvement over the current system. In fact, this is beyond reprehensible.

When someone manages to explain how this works to the poor, Obamacare and the presidency of Obama will be over. The Presidents already low approval ratings could well drop to zero (That would be interesting to see from a historic perspective.) Any Republicans or Libertarians reading? Here’s your chance, to engage across class boundaries.

Then as I pulled at the frayed threads of the new policy offering I discovered this…

My monthly payment will probably go up, as will my deductible. My RX coverage even for Generic drugs will be reduced or eliminated.

WTF? I thought Obamacare was supposed to make insurance more affordable – not less.

I think that Obamacare will break the back of the insurance companies and the medical profession.

When the experiment is finished we’ll all be worse off than before, and Americans may well be dying in their beds from simple treatable illnesses because they can’t afford the costs of insurance AND treatment.

NewImage

Then I think about the Obamacare web site and my head explodes again.

I’ve worked in Banking, and Mortgage Insurance. We, and by “We” I mean relatively small groups of developers, testers and analysts built systems that facilitated the earning, control, or transfer of literally BILLIONS of dollars per year.

It was not uncommon for the teams I worked in, to have 4 major projects per year and those projects interacted with customers and in many cases various governmental agencies.

For someone in my position, my head explodes with each new revelation about the manner in which the Healthcare.gov website was created, If ever there was an excuse to fire a group of people this is it.

Best practices for web design and implementation are printed in books, available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple. The first two vendors will sell you the books as a set, in hardcopy. You may not know how to code a website… but you damn sure can learn how to manage a website project.

This is not new technology, webs sites, and e-commerce sites are well understood and there are literally millions of people in this country with the correct expertise for a project like Healthcare.gov.

Many of the people with this expertise are/were unemployed!

The revelation this morning was that as much as 60% to 70% of the backend of the Obamacare site hasn’t been written.

NewImage

Screech!!! Wait! What!

Primary accounting functions, Transaction functions haven’t even been written!

So what HHS is saying, is the website that has been broken from day one… doesn’t actually connect the user to the insurers is a really useful way?

Yet to interact and shop on the site you have to enter all kinds of personal data, Then the site is incapable of taking the consumers payment information, supplying the insurer with that payment and applying the subsidy if applicable?

REALLY???? NewImage

What the hell? Just what have these contractors been doing for the past 3.5 years?

I know exactly what they’ve been doing…

The various contractor groups and the HHS Department have been involved in a clusterfuck of inter-office politics. No-one was in control, yet everyone thought they were top dog.

NewImage

Every one curried favor and allies and then tried to figure out who’s was bigger.

All the while saying that they were tightening budgets and hiring people who met EOE regulations even though the people they hired weren’t the best people for the job.

But there were no specifications about what the freaking website was supposed to accomplish and how.

There were probably people like me asking why? Those folks were shusshed and told that they didn’t understand the process.

There were endless reports written, powerpoint presentations given and lots of self congratulatory back slapping.

Meanwhile the specifications were too specific about irrelevant issues like the manufacturer of the resistor at location g239 on board 12 of the servers being used to host the website. And not specific enough about what the button on the screen labeled “Submit” was actually supposed to do.

The folks like me were  probably pointing out, in corporate America that heads would be rolling down the hallways.

The govt contractors and employees all just looked at them astounded. The fundamental disconnect is that for govt workers the reams and reams of paper reports that no one reads, and endless uninformative powerpoint presentations and meets ARE working. Even though these activities rarely get things done.

NewImage

The people actually doing the work were no doubt left to guess at what the government wanted, and how it was supposed to work.

Then every six months, there would be a change in direction that required the programmers and technical people to start all over again.

That’s why we have a simple website that’s all but useless.

That’s why our government has pissed through a BILLION dollars and has a site that looks like a Junior High School kid built it.

That’s why we’ll spend another billion to get it right.

Every single one of those people in government who were in control of this whole ACA (Obamacare) abortion… should be thrown out on the streets.

Set an example at the ballot box.

NewImage

Demand that your congressman take action and start firing, or impeaching, or recalling these people.

Whatever it takes it’s time to clean house and start fresh.

I can’t promise I won’t write about Obamacare again.

I’ll try not to.

Say no to the fearmongers.

I was watching the CBS news last night.

NewImage

I know, not a good thing and certain to give you indigestion.

They caught my attention because they did this “shooting timeline

Essentially, they plotted all the “Major” ie “Newsworthy” shootings in 2012 & 2013 and concluded that these shootings typically happened about 6 weeks apart.

They ended of course with the LAX and Westfield Mall shootings. And a grim total of 84 dead.

I should point out that the Westfield mall shooting resulted in no shootings except the self inflicted fatal wound of the shooter himself.

NewImage

What struck me was that CBS didn’t include police shootings which I would argue are far more terrifying because the police are supposed to protect us, not shoot us.

The most recent of these was in New York where officers shot at and missed a perpetrator but managed to wound innocent bystanders on the street.

They also said nothing about the 13 year old who was shot and killed on the street near his home by a police officer in Northern California less than 10 seconds after the encounter began. The 13 year old was carrying a bb gun…

NewImage

CBS also completely ignored the incessant shootings in Chicago and Washington DC. I would argue that the daily violence in Chicago rivals or exceeds the violence we saw in the Nigeria mall shooting, which CBS included in their mass shooting timeline.

NewImage

How many people per day have to be shot in Chicago’s “Gun Free zone” before the magnitude of this national tragedy and fallacy of “Gun Free Zones” is newsworthy?

Don’t misunderstand, mass shootings are horrible. They’re the product of a deranged mind or minds. Shootings during the commission of a crime are horrific.

Often these shootings are used as circumstantial evidence in support of stricter gun control.

This was evident in the CBS report as one to the CBS reporters was shown asking Harry Reid if he would push additional gun control legislation given the recent LAX and Mall shootings.

I find myself on the other side of the argument.

NewImage

I can’t help but think if one or two citizens had been carrying concealed weapons, or if an off-duty police officer (who could shoot straight) was carrying a weapon that the mall shooting, or the Colorado theater shooting, or the LAX shooting, or Sandy Hook, would have ended very differently.

By differently, I mean with the deranged individual bleeding out on the floor and the innocent citizens either physically unscathed or far fewer number among the injured.

NewImage

I’m not suggesting a wild west scenario, I’m suggesting, putting down an obvious and dangerous threat to the society.

We’d have no problem, and in fact in the past we didn’t have a problem shooting rabid animals in the streets when they posed a threat to the community.

These deranged criminals, regardless of their mental health, their medications, or lack thereof are demonstrably more dangerous to the community than any rabid animal.

I find myself believing more and more that community safety is better preserved by having random people in the community carrying concealed weapons, and knowing how to use them.

If a criminal has no idea and no way to anticipate what kind of resistance they’re likely to encounter then only very stupid or very desperate criminals will commit heinous acts of mass violence.

NewImage

When I say carrying concealed weapons, It’s implied that these folks are properly trained, and know how to use their weapons appropriately.

Some people go through the training, and simulated crime situations only to discover they don’t have the temperament to carry a concealed weapon.

Most, if not all of those folks take that knowledge and don’t go any further. They don’t carry weapons, because they’ve learned that their temperaments or beliefs won’t let them harm another person.

Other people may discover that they’re a little too quick to draw and that too is valuable knowledge which may prevent those individuals from obtaining a concealed carry permit.

Obviously the rules and permitting requirements vary from state to state, but training is almost always at the core of any concealed carry permit process.

Either case, desperate or stupid, I believe a criminal is more likely to be stopped before doing serious damage in a society where NewImageconcealed carry (and appropriate training) is the norm.

The fearmongers would have you believe that guns are used only by criminals, or sick individuals, the deranged, or terrorists.

The fearmongers would present a case where we can only be safe if guns and gun ownership are reduced.

NewImage

The fearmongers will sell you a belief that anyone who wants a gun is by definition; sick, twisted, insane, criminal, or a terrorist.

This is the worst kind of misrepresentation. It’s actually an example of conflation and to my mind it’s among the most despicable things of which the main stream media is guilty.

Last nights CBS broadcast was simply another in a long line of Anti “this” and Pro “that” rhetoric designed to manipulate our people, (For our own good, of course).

One need only compare and contrast the medias reporting styles from administration to administration to see manipulation time and again.

Recently I found myself finding this all too familiar.

It was as if I’d read it or seen it in an “reductio ad absurdum” form in a book or movie.

The propaganda of many governments and tyrannical regimes springs easily to mind. Those examples are paraded by all opponents of any government policy.

What was trying to surface from the dark recesses of my curdled brain was more extreme…

Then I was reminded of the movie Serenity.

In the movie, a Teacher is describing all the benefits of Alliance rule, and how it brought true civilization to many worlds.

One of the students asks why a rebel group would refuse all these benefits and fight against the Alliance.

Another student says, “People don’t like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don’t run, don’t walk. We’re in their homes and in their heads and we haven’t the right. We’re meddlesome.”

The teacher replies, We’re not telling them what to think, we’re telling them how.

Later, One of the heroes, after discovering that the Alliance has lied and carried out an experiment that was supposed to make people peaceful but which destroyed millions, an entire world and also created a group of very aggressive monsters says; “Sure as I know anything, I know this – they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten? They’ll swing back to the belief that they can make people… better.”

I think my brain latched onto the movie because it was ironic coming from Hollywood. Hollywood has been a staunch supporter of public policies designed to make us better.

NewImage

No plastic bags.

No smoking… not in bars, not in cars, not on the beach, and recently not even in your own apartment.

No guns, more government control, less individual responsibility…

Entertainment has reflected these messages.

But these reflections are from a dark and elitist mirror.

NewImage

Hollywood celebrities who run afoul of the law receive only the lightest of punishments. The average person committing the same crime, finds themselves being gang raped in prison.

Congress imposes laws, punitive taxes, and creates draconian bureaucracies, yet exempts themselves as a function of the same law. The bureaucracies consider our lawmakers exempt from their tender mercies as well.

All of it of course is  “in the public interest”, “for your own good”, “for the good of the children”.

Sometimes they’re even right. But even in being “right”…

NewImage

They’re meddlesome.

Through it all, our media continues to repeat the accepted party line in a never ending sycophantic orgy, instead of asking questions, reporting facts and performing their duty.

NewImage

Benjamin Franklins quote;

Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see

Rings truer today than ever before.

Give it some thought when you listening to the evening news.

Just sayin…

After being chastised for too much techno-drivel I choose current events for $800.

I’m not sure what to write about…

NewImage

How about the 160,000 people that will be losing, or have lost their insurance in California due to the implementation of Obamacare? Yes, Yes, I know it’s actually called ACA now that  The President is trying to distance himself from the controversy.

I note that he called it Obamacare in at least one speech…

Of course that was when he was still telling us all that we’d get to keep our current healthcare coverage. That was when he was trying to be a salesman instead of The President.

How about the controversy over the Governments website? Or the fact that there are so many out of work QA people like myself who’d have loved to have jobs testing the code.

Oh, right! The government was so sure that their code was perfect they didn’t bother to test it until the last two weeks before going live.

NewImage

I suppose I could comment on the hearings about the website, and that the insanity you’re hearing or reading about is totally normal in almost ANY government contract.

No one in government has a good idea about what the “Current” technology looks like.

The government tends to write contracts such that even if you have a better idea, or more current technology that is faster, cheaper, and works better, you can’t implement it.

Why???? Oh my dear boy… it’s because the contract can’t be changed without a review and the review will take at least 6 months and have to be voted on by some committee or possibly even Congress.

So this means that HTML ver 2.0 was used instead of the later version that is better, faster, and potentially more secure.

NewImage

Or that the CPU used in a particular piece of hardware that used to cost $20 when the contract was finalized, will cost $2020 in runs of 10,000 by the time the contract actually is completed.

The cost increase for the CPU is because the CPU is obsolete and now has to be custom manufactured.

It’s this kind of insanity that causes lots of companies to actively refuse government contracts.

Which inevitably leads to specialized government contractors who will do exactly what the contract says. Even when they know what the government has specified will not work.

After all why shouldn’t they?

There’s no real upside in suggesting changes to the contract.

In fact while the changes are under review the government won’t pay to keep employees assigned to the contract, this is called a stop work situation.

Then when the changes are approved the people that were working on the project are no longer available. Those people have been reassigned to other projects or they’ve been laid off and found employment elsewhere.

NewImage

The upside for these government contractors is reworking the project for years and billing the government to do it.

But boys and girls… this is the way things in Washington work and to some extent it’s a direct result of a government that is too big and bloated. For all the hand wringing and yelling in any of these hearings…

Nothing will change.
