Confederate Flags – Symbols of Hate or Heritage?

Stop the insanity!

Taking down a flag, or a monument, or stomping out a cultural identity is wrong. Isn’t it?

I’m sure that Native Americans could weigh in on that statement. Or for that matter African Americans?

Lets face it, Dylann Roof is NUTS! That’s pretty obvious, let’s call it what it is.  Roof claims that his attitude changed during the Travon Martin insanity.

Roof claims that he kept hearing about it, he got curious and after looking it all up on the internet he decided that a race war was necessary.

Okay, so why aren’t we banning the internet, or the news media? Obviously roof is a special kind of nuts to boot. What kind of psychopath can sit in a room participating in prayer then kill the people he was worshiping with?

All that aside, would we be banning the American Flag or the Gadsden, or the flag of the Union if he’d been photographed holding one of them?

I agree that the Confederate flag should be removed from various statehouses and government buildings.

In point of fact I thought the Confederate flag HAD been removed from those facilities decades ago. It’s well past time. I was surprised that any state buildings were still flying it. States like Mississippi will have a bit more trouble not flying the Confederate flag but only until they redesign their state flag

I don’t however agree that the Confederate flag be stricken from all sales outlets, or erased from history. Yet that seems to be exactly what is happening. I really have a problem when monuments to southern leaders, are being defaced, and confederate flags are forbidden in games, or over confederate burial sites.

Being raised in the South I remember seeing the Confederate flag but it wasn’t all over the place. It was mostly a point of heritage, pride in the South, more like a celebration of southern culture. Which as many people who’ve visited the South discover, is pleasantly different from other areas of the country.

DSC 0649

I was at an event last night where I met a California Native who’d just returned from their first visit to the deep south. They were gushing about how polite people were. They were impressed that even the panhandlers were nice and didn’t curse at passersby who didn’t put money in their collection hat. Yeah, it’s become common in LA that panhandlers get nasty if you don’t give them money. Go Figure!

The point is, when someone visits the South they’re often amazed at how different the reality of the place is from their preconceived notions. Sure the South has problems, and stupid people, and even crazy people. But it also has charm, grace, and history.

Old

As a southerner I have zero patience for those who bash the South having never been there.  I may live in California, but my heart is still southern, when folks start painting the South with that broad brush saying things like; “Everyone in the South are bigots. Well, you know how ignorant they are down there.” I tend to get a bit spun up.

Civil War

I’ve visited confederate sites all over the South, does that make me a bigot, a hater, a racist, or a potential murderer of a bible study group?

NOPE! It makes me a person who visited those sites and who saw battlefields where hundreds, or thousands of men died. These are places of sorrow. Not because the South lost, but because of the waste, and the bitterness that precipitated the civil war.

Elitist

Contrary to popular belief it wasn’t ONLY about slavery. There were other components; like states rights, federal over-reach, business, and commerce. Slavery was a part of it but not the only part.

As a southerner visiting these sites it’s painfully obvious that secession was ultimately wrong because that action led inevitably to war. I’m really offended when someone says, “The South Lost, get over it.”

I’m offended mainly because you don’t need to tell a southerner the outcome of the civil war, anymore than you need to tell a black person they’re black or a jew what happened at Auschwitz.

Southerners know that confederate money isn’t going to come back in vogue, the South isn’t going to “Rise Again” and slavery was wrong. We know these things through the lens of history. In fact most of us aren’t looking behind and living in the past, we’re looking forward and trying to forge a future.

KKK

The KKK is… or was, dying. I suspect that in less than a generation it wouldn’t have been able to sustain itself because it is considered even in the South to be just wrong and it hadn’t been gaining converts. That all may change now.

This change might not be due to renewed racism, but due to folks who believe they’re “our betters” once again telling southerners what they are, (racist, evil, stupid, bigots), and then trying to tell southerners how to live and think while continuing the “stupid southerners, racist southerners” chant.

Disobey

I can’t get over the Orwellian direction our country has apparently taken. Are we really wanting to “Memory Hole” anything and everything  that we don’t like? If we do and become a “Society of the NOW” won’t we be opening ourselves to repeating the mistakes of the past?

As a Southerner I can tell you, in my life and the lives of most of my peers the confederate flag exists in our psyche in its proper context.

It is not a rallying cry for racism. It’s a symbol of a place in common, a point of origin that is different from every other place in the country.

NewSouthernflag3b1

A unique place where thunderstorms, red clay, water skiing, boats of all shapes & sizes, and fireflies dancing on a warm evening breeze, live forever in our memories. We come from a place where being polite is important and where we call Steel Magnolias, “Mom”.

Taking the flag out of our sight will not change those who are racists, nor will it change substantially the character of the South and is therefore an empty gesture.

NewSouthernflag3a

However, since so many people are all about erasing the Confederate battle flag I propose one of  these two flags as the new flag of Southern Heritage. These flags are clean, inoffensive, and exemplify the new realities of our “Brave Society”.

Just a thought…

Well I think I’m going to have “The Vapors”

Screen Shot 2015 06 18 at 4 10 21 PM

So sometimes I get all snarky, and sometimes the people I love respond in interesting ways.

I saw this headline from The Daily News  ‘White people are terrorists!’ Heckler yells at CNN during live broadcast in Charleston, calls Don Lemon an ‘Uncle Tom’

I grabbed the link and sent it off to a friend prefaced with

Well then, I guess we’re done with any attempt at living together!

Wow…

Barbarians 1987

What I got back was this…

Here’s the truth of it,

It’s a divided country… culturally, sexually, politically, in all ways. We are no more than the animals from which we descended. We’ve painted a thin veneer of “civilization” on top of the denial we have practiced for generations. As our country and culture ages, that veneer is being chipped away.

Now its nature’s way of saying, “Who the fuck do you people think you are?… Do you think you’re special?… Go fuck yourselves!”

If there is a god, it’s, “You’re here to amuse me, that’s it… go fuck yourselves!”.

So you wish you could run away to another country?… Riiiiight!… Won’t make no nevermind where you go.

Earth

There’s a storm approaching. There may be nothing left in the aftermath but 8 billion bloated meat puppets. We will have earned it.

Something is trying to tell the world, “You’re no more than children. And children often need to be reminded of the order of things.”

The view from 45,000 ft. is that of a world of primitive barbarians engaged in perpetual tribal warfare.

We need to adopt the same view from the ground… behave accordingly… and stop acting so fucking shocked and surprised.

Here’s your next blog entry.

And there you have it.

Easiest blog I’ve ever posted.

Then in a related story… There’s this

Woman calls for Race War at Scene of Church Shooting

Apparently this is the same woman that called Don Lemon an “Uncle Tom”.  Who says African Americans can’t be racists?

All I can say is this has either got to STOP… or BRING IT!  All the simmering hatred is like a festering pustule on the ass of the world, we either need to just pop it or heal it.

It doesn’t matter which direction we take, we can’t go on like this.

OH Yeah, But CNN isn’t biased in any way…

Fredricka Whitfield

I’ve been catching the buzz about this “Journalist” all weekend.

By now you’re heard about the Dallas standoff. Some idiot apparently rolled up to the PoPo’s (Police) headquarters and started shooting.

That was bad enough but then you have this moronic bitch on CNN named Fredricka Whitfield calling the shooter courageous… Yeah you read that right THE SHOOTER!

“It was very courageous and brave, if not crazy as well, to open fire on the police headquarters, and now you have this scene, this standoff. So you believe these are the hallmarks of more than one person’s involvement?”

She’s apologized and no I’m not bothering to go searching for the full text of her apology because it doesn’t freaking matter.

prisonoutside

John Nolte at Breitbart wrote a scathing article yesterday that I think is right on point.  In the article he calls out CNN on their campaign of dishonesty and “race-mongering” Going back to St. Travon of the Hoodie.

I find myself asking WHAT THE LIVING FUCK?

First of all when did we declare war on the police? Second of all when did the police declare war on anyone else?

If after a proper LEGAL investigation you find have bad cops, fire them! It’s that simple. In our current environment we’ve got cops that are literally afraid to enforce the law.

You know, the LAW that a disproportionate number of African Americans seem to think they CAN break with no repercussions.

It’s real simple If I have to obey a law… SO DO YOU!

blackprisoners

If there is a disproportionate number of black people in jail then rather than saying that’s not fair… how about lets ask a simple question “Did this person break the law?” If the answer is YES then they’re right where they should be.

And by the way, as a supposedly “white privileged male” I’d expect no different treatment were I to break the law. Hell where I grew up they publish the pictures of the most wanted in the newspaper weekly.  Oddly, the most wanted is a pretty even mix of skin colors, even though it’s redneck central.

The Adult males in my life used to say, “Chain gangs take all comers, if you can walk, carry a shovel, or a trash bag they don’t give a shit what color you are.”

Perhaps that’s why I’ve been confused for quite some time by the claims that black folks are unfairly targeted.

Here are some examples that have confused me.

A car flys up behind me when I’m doing 80 and worrying about being pulled over. The car sits on my bumper for four heartbeats, before I can get out of this guy’s way he passes me on the right without signaling the lane change and accelerates away at 100. Two miles down the road he’s pulled over by the police. Sorry! That’s NOT TARGETING or profiling, that’s what happens when you do something so obvious that the police have no choice but to take action. You better hope you don’t have any outstanding warrants!

We watch the security video of a black man waving a gun in a convenience store, the gun goes off and the clerk is shot. Well Let’s see, Robbery, Compounded with a weapon, Bodily harm, and Murder charges if the clerk dies. Ummm as a “privileged white man” if it was me on the video, I know there is NO way I’m walking away from that.

The 18 to 20 year old black kid stepping in front of a line of people at a Taco Bell who then gets belligerent because someone IN the line says, “Hey, the back of the line is over there.”  That situation is bad enough, but when the kid throws a punch at the person calling him on his cutting in line, and that person happens to be an off duty cop… Well guess what? The Black kid is  going to jail for assault.

RachaelDolezal

Oh and by the way… I’m the lily white fucker that was laughing my ass off at you kid. Really? You didn’t notice that the fanny pack the guy you threw a punch at, looked like it weighed a lot? You didn’t notice the opening in the side of the fanny pack or that the guy was resting his hand on the edge of the pack when you stormed up to him?  Sweet thing, you deserve to be the bitch of someone with a 10 inch long beercan of a dick.

The next time you’re on a highway especially in Southern California, watch the cars that are speeding, weaving, and running up behind an 18 wheel truck only to slam on their brakes. Take note and I’ll bet ya you’ll see a disproportional number of black faces.

The point is, the disproportional number of black folks in prison are there because they caught the attention of the police. And that’s not unfair, it’s because actions have consequences.

The consequences of Fredricka Whitfield’s statement should be that she is fired! But she won’t be, because she is the most privileged of all folks in our society. She’s a black female public figure…

I guess that’s why Rachael Dolezal played the race card the way she did.

What ever happened to EQUAL?

Boston University FINALLY got around to condemning a Professors Racist Misandric tweets.

donaldsterling

I’m about to talk about that which dare not be spoken of.

NO! Not kinky sex, hell I’ll talk about that!

In this context I’m speaking about Racism & Sexism.

Close your eyes and think “RACIST” What do you visualize? Now repeat the exercise and think “SEXIST”, do yo see the same person?

We’ve all been trained to think of racism and sexism in terms of the racist is ALWAYS WHITE and a Sexist Bastard is ALWAYS a MALE and usually White.

But there has been a growing sexist / racist element in our society which is not always white, and which is almost never male that gets a pass to say things I haven’t’ heard since the ‘60s.

davidduke

Consider this phrase:

Why is black America so reluctant to identify black college males as a problem population?

You read that and think, “OMG that’s SOOO Racist! The man that said that should be punished!” And you’d be right according to the unwritten rules of our society today.

You’d expect a comment like that from Rush Limbaugh, or Donald Sterling, or David Duke.

What was actually said:

why is white america so reluctant to identify white college males as a problem population?

tweet1

It’s just as racist.

The “Man” that said this is actually a Sociology and African American Studies Professor named Saida Grundy, who happens to be a black woman.

While Donald Sterling was forced to sell his interest in his basketball franchise, publicly humiliated, and denied his freedom of speech and opinion, this professor enjoys protection of her free speech rights. Frankly I don’t see the difference between the two people.

Boston University is asserting that her first amendment right to free speech while disagreeable, is protected.

Fundamentally I agree. Freedom of speech applies equally to all of us.  So does the public shaming, the loss of career, and all the punishment commonplace in our society today.

We’ll force a millionaire owner to divest himself of a franchise because he used the “N” word (Exercising his right to free speech), but we’ll give this professor a pass to say something equally offensive? Does anyone else see a problem with this?

We’ll force a TV personality like Paula Dean loose pretty much everything because she said the “N” word 25 years ago.

NicoleHe Tweet

But we’ll tolerate an Asian lady in a well known financial organization tweeting that she hates white people.

In her case there was no penalty. Even when other twitter followers demanded a response from Kickstarter there was no apology, & no consequences for this sweet racist.

A person of color is not automatically immune to being a racist anymore than a woman is immune to being a sexist.  Our society continues to choose to look the other way when a non-white person or woman behaves or speaks in a racist or sexist way.

Plain and simple if it’s wrong for one group, it’s wrong for all groups, regardless of the groups protected status or historical injustices committed against them.

We must all be treated with respect, dignity and equality or none of us will ever know equality. That means calling out a woman if she’s sexist. And calling out a person of color, if they’re racist.

It’s well past time for equality to be applied equally.

Hey Comedy Central, Its time for “The Nightly Show” to GO!

larrywilmore

Larry Wilmore is about as funny as a finding out you just went down on someone with an antibiotic resistant venereal disease.

The sad part is that he thinks he’s funny.

I thank God that I have an “OFF” button on my remote control, each and every time I hear this guy open his mouth.

Comedy Central you need to stick with interesting stuff that is actually funny.

Key and Peele for example are experimental and sometimes I plain don’t get it, but they’re worth watching because when they get it right, they’re funny as hell.

I watch your network to laugh, South Park, Futurama, & your stand up comedians usually make my day. Do what you do well, keep us laughing!

SouthPark WavingShot

The Nightly Show is absolute SHIT!

If I want cynical, comedic news, I’ll watch CNN.

Even Tosh.0 is better than Larry Wilmore & The Nightly Show. My fingers burst into flames typing that!

Call this guy and his show a #FAIL and move on.

Or you can keep registering God knows how many people pressing the “OFF” button…

Your Choice.
