Every Day is Exactly the Same

Today is a stream of consciousness blog:

I wake up get my coffee, check my email, scan the news, and then the day blurs into yesterday, and the day before, and before, and before.

This morning I woke up with the Nine Inch Nails song, Every Day is Exactly the Same running through my head.

Generally speaking I like Nine Inch Nails. I’m not sure about hearing them in my head at 6:00am.

Oh there’s some slight variation around the house but really it’s all the same. BORING!

My head is feeling muddy I’m not able to really think or process much and with each passing day I’m thinking less and less. I can’t get into reading anything and I’m having a hard time focusing on or learning new things, even those things that I want to do.

This malaise has recently been strongly highlighted with the realization that I haven’t been practicing guitar like I should have been. My left hand is not as strong as it should be, or was. It occurred to me that even if I’m not learning something new I should just be running scales to keep the hand strength and dexterity.

So I’ve got the acoustic guitar sitting on a stand next to my desk as a reminder that if I do nothing else playing scales is better than nothing. It’s working too. I’m picking up the guitar often during the day. It is providing a mental break from looking for a job, and worry.

Writing is slow and I’m not making a lot of progress. Even posting a blog is hard whereas before all this tedium, blogging was fast and the thoughts flowed out of my addled brain.

A plumber is coming today to take care of water related issues around the house. Stuff is just wearing out and I hate plumbing with a passion. So he’s going to be around here taking care of multiple issues.

In preparation for the work I pulled my car out of the garage and parked it at a kind neighbor’s place. I’d washed and waxed it the other day and this was the first time I’d had it out in the sunlight since. Looks like I did an okay job.

As I was walking back from the neighbors house, I looked at the front lawn. It was then that I realized I hadn’t been out front (and paying attention) for a while. I need to get out there and do some weed whacking.

To fight the boredom and as a possible hedge against continued supply line disruptions, I ordered some above ground planters. My intention is to use some sunny space in the back yard to grow vegetables. It appears that I can get one harvest, possibly two depending on the vegetable.

It probably wont make too big a dent in the overall scheme of things but it will pass the time. I like fresh veggies and there are a number of varieties that will grow even at this altitude. I’ve gone with the raised boxes because the soil here is rather poor and it’s unlikely that I could amend the soil in the back yard enough to get decent yields.

God only knows how much it’s going to cost to fill these planters with good soil, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.. I think the next week is going to be about bringing the sprinklers online for the yard in general. I’ll have to find the line that’s never been used. It’s buried around the perimeter of the deck. My plan is to make that line a drip watering line for the veggies. I can always re-task it later, if need be.

I’m trying to make some of the days different. If for no other reason than otherwise I’ll go quietly insane.

I noticed NASA was hiring folks to participate in an 8 month long Mars mission simulation. That might be a tough sell after this lockdown. On the other hand I’d actually consider it, after I’ve had some time to be out & about interacting with other people.

3 months, 8 months, there’s not much difference. Give me my computer, my guitar, occasional company, and an airlock & I’d be fine. The airlock would be so that I could practice guitar without driving other people crazy.

I’d imagine that there wouldn’t be much bandwidth to surf the net or watch movies, given that it’s supposed to be a simulation. If you’re simulating, you’d also have to simulate the time lag between Earth and Mars. Even at the speed of light radio takes time to get to Mars and back to Earth.

But I could write and study. I’m sure that there are routine maintenance duties to be performed in such a simulation. You’d have to maintain the O2 & C02 Scrubbers. There’s probably going to be some kind of hydroponics. and activities in some kind of environmental suits outside the habitat.

Those duties would probably be an opportunity to learn some interesting things too. Hell, I could see learning stuff from the other participants and perhaps teaching what I know to them. I’d probably be journaling a lot more too.

I’m sure that there’s a huge psychological component to be observed. How people navigate the annoying habits of their co-workers when you have to deal with them 24/7 and other social issues.

Certainly a lot of those kinds of studies have been done on the ISS and in submarines over the years. I’m not terribly sure what new information could be gained except to say those studies have been performed on highly trained exceptional individuals and this study looks like it might be trying to collect information about what happens when more “average” folks are placed in stressful situations.

Who knows, they might just need or want a pragmatic jack of all trades, master of none, in their mix, just to see where it goes.

Oh Nancy!

Ms. Pelosi…

Ipelosi78.jpeg’m sure that the Botox has paralyzed your brain.  You do realize that too much Botox may have side effects right?

Here, just for your information is the list of Botox side effects:

allergic reactions, rash, itching, headache, neck or back pain, muscle stiffness, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, flu symptoms, cold symptoms, respiratory infections, dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling, anxiety, dry mouth, ringing in your ears, increased sweating in areas other than the underarms, urinary tract infections, burning/painful urination, and difficulty urinating.

injection site reactions including
bruising, bleeding, pain, redness, swelling, or infection,

So Nancy, you might want to have a discussion with your doctor about being over-botoxed. I can understand your desire to be pre-embalmed, but even the Ancient Egyptians didn’t start the process pre-mortem. Although come to think of it you do look like a mummy now.

Based on the side effect list, is it just possible that it’s the Botox and not The President that’s causing that nagging pain in your neck?

It was kind of you to express your concern about the health of The President upon his disclosure that he’d been taking Hydroxychloroquine for the past two weeks.

However it is exactly opposite of your previously expressed desires. While you personally may not have suggested that you hope he falls ill, your flying monkey minions most certainly have. It’s safe to say they are your mouthpieces, so what they say are certainly echos of your desires.

I think I should point out for you, and your minions that if The President is incapacitated or dies, You still won’t be president, nor will Hillary Clinton. There’s the little matter of Vice President Pence. Or are you expecting for something untoward to befall him too?

Is your plan to insert Hillary as VP in the interim before the election and then let the Hillary Curse take care of then presiding President Pence? Or is that the plan if Biden is elected?

You’ll have to pardon my misgivings about you and our government. Your tone deafness to the American People does not engender trust. Suffice it to say that you do not have my vote. I’d sooner cast my vote for a homeless syphilitic drug addict than you. At least such a person would do little harm to the nation.

Ms. Pelosi, Fat Shaming? Oh my… that’s low, even for you. Is this yet another example of your hypocrisy.

Is your intent to suggest that fat shaming is only wrong if it’s against Women? You know men have fat shaming issues too. We’re simply not as likely to whine in public about it. I’d imagine that we’re more likely to seek comfort in the solitude of our closed garages with our beloved cars motor running.

But of course that’s of no concern to you. After all, many of your minions clearly hate men, or at least believe that all men are evil, with the notable exception of Joe Biden.

He’s allowed to completely sidestep rather serious and somewhat credible allegations of sexual misconduct. The fact notwithstanding that he’s been observed, in public and often, behaving inappropriately.

Brett Kavanaugh on the other hand was excoriated for something that could at best be described as college hijinks and stupidity. Even the witness wasn’t sure about what happened.

Double standard much?

I don’t hate you, I won’t waste the energy on hatred or even intense dislike. I’m a big believer in Karma. I know you’ll get what’s coming to you, because your kind of evil always does.

When you lose your election, when you see your works dismantled piece by piece, when you’re the one testifying before congress for your misdeeds, when you lose all that you have and are cast upon the rubbish pile of history, and yet continue to live a long, long life.

I’ll be smiling. I’ve learned first hand, that Karma is a stone bitch. I dare to hope that Karma is in a particularly bad mood the day she looks at you. It would be an absolute joy to see you duckwalked in handcuffs out of congress.

Understand it’s not necessarily your politics that I find so distasteful. It’s your duplicity.

I keep waiting for her eyes to start glowing.

Greta Thunberg is apparently an “expert?“

She appeared on CNN’s Townhall about coronavirus.

Really? I guess all it takes for you to become a celebrity these days is to speak to your elders harshly. Remember this is the little girl who chastised the United fucking Nations and predicted doom and gloom for the world.

All I can hear as she speaks is a ringtone from The Goths in SouthPark “Death and Despair… Death and Despair…“

We have climate change scientists that can’t seem to get their modeling right. And I’m talking about real scientists who are doing real work.

What makes this little girl an appropriate spokesperson on anything, much less a chaotic system like climate?

But there she is on our televisions again.

What power does she have?

Greta Thunberg 2 420x315I see her picture, hear her speak, and wonder what is going on?  Then I saw this picture on Breitbart this morning and it clicked.

I’ve seen that look before. It bugged the hell out of me and after a few minutes searching my memory, I remembered.

I saw that expression in Village of the Damned

VillageOfTheDamnedOMG! We’ve been invaded by Aliens!!!!

That would explain a lot of things.

Her meteoric rise from obscurity, her access to the halls of power, and the elite.

Her disdain for humanity and the feeling that when she’s talking she’s judging people as vermin.

(Full disclosure, I often feel that way too. So I’m possibly calling the kettle black in this instance.)

It makes perfect sense! She’s part of the advance guard. Her people are on their way and they’re concerned that the planetary ecology will be too screwed up for them to take over. The area of the planet that she comes from is a bit cooler, maybe her people can’t take the heat. That would make global warming a big problem.

I guess we need to start looking for others. Probably folks who come from Canada, the northern United States, Norway, Sweden, Greenland, Iceland, and Siberia. Lest we forget the Southern Hemisphere. New Zealand, parts of Australia, Argentina, The Falkland Islands, and The South Sandwich Islands.

Anderson CooperWho else from those areas might we be suspicious of? What positions of power might they have? How long have they been here?

Now wait just a damn minute!

Nooooo It can’t be true! Not Anderson!

Just a goof folks, Having a little bit of fun.

I honestly don’t think Greta should be in the public eye, I think she should be in school.

I’ve just had it with the constant doom, gloom, and the lockdown. So I thought I’d let my conspiracy theory horses out for a run.

I’d almost prefer an interstellar war. At least then I’d know why my life has been thrown into chaos, and why it may never return to normal.

Loki.jpgAfter hearing what some of our politicians have said and how they’ve behaved toward their citizens I was reminded of Loki in The Avengers.

“Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state? It’s the unspoken truth of humanity that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life’s joy in a mad scramble for power. For identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel.” ― Loki of Asgard

Which is why I decided to take a break from the news, and quite possibly a break from technology for the weekend.

I hope you have a great weekend. Turn off the news and take a deep breath.

From time to time

I’ll wander out to the SPLC mostly to see who the hate group de jour is.

FVedWNaQSd.jpeg

I always leave the site shaking my head, surprised at what passes for a “Hate Group” these days.

Often, I’ll head out to the groups they’ve designated as hate groups and in fact some of these groups are truly hateful.

Others not so much, I read what some of these “Hate Groups” say and think, “that’s not something I would agree with but I wouldn’t call it hate.” I would call what a lot of these so called “Hate Groups” are saying as, “Not Main Stream”. Perhaps even a little nationalistic.

But they’re not espousing the hateful rhetoric of the KKK, or Muslim Extremism. Which to my mind are two peas in the same pod.

In my world view anyone that says another group is “Less Than” because of color, national origin is racist.

I don’t care what your skin color is, If you’re saying someone with a different skin color is bad, solely on the basis of their skin well you’re a racist.

vJOaeIzabe.jpeg

If you disagree with someone who happens to look different than you do, and that disagreement has nothing to do with skin color, then you have no grounds to call them a racist and they have no grounds to call you a racist.

You’re presumably adults who have different opinions. That is not racism, that is a disagreement.

But I digress.

I have noticed that some of these groups have really interesting logos, and art pieces with messages emblazoned over the art.

Advertising / Merchandising… “May the Swartz be with you…” I smile when I think about Mel Brooks in Space Balls.

I would suggest to many of these groups, check your spelling and punctuation. (I’m bad with both myself)

Your message may be muddied by typos. If your message is riddled with poor punctuation and typos, you’ve set yourself up to be cast as ignorant, racist, hayseed, or whatever, by people like those at the SPLC. Bad spelling and punctuation prove their assertions.

To the right are a couple of the images that I saw just today.

The best image I’ve seen today accompanied a Twitter post about lockdowns. I don’t know if this was an accident, or if it was staged. Either way it made me laugh.

XnptqcOKTH.jpegI hope everyone is having a good day.

I don’t know if this is a good idea

There’ve been a lot of articles recently, about Google and Apple collaborating on a Coronavirus tracking application

At first glance, you think, “good,” that will make it easier for health officials to figure out how to stay ahead of outbreaks.

It would, but at a price to your privacy.

We have only Apple and Google’s assurances that the information won’t be misused. Implicit in this software solution is the belief that when the Coronavirus emergency is over that the tracking information, indeed the application itself will be of no further use. The assumption is that the application can be deleted and tracking will by default, be turned off. How do we know that & how can we verify that this is true?

I could see an application such as Google and Apple are working on, morphing into a general “Health” application wherein a wide variety of diseases are tracked. As I understand the Coronavirus aspect if you test positive for Coronavirus and enter your diagnosis into the application, then your movements are plotted. Local health officials can then watch the spread of Coronavirus throughout a community presumably because other people will also be entering their diagnosis too.

This raises some questions for me. If one person whose positive, visits an area and other people get sick is that person liable? Could they be prosecuted or sued? Should they be? I’m sure that due to the fear promulgated by media, politicians, and rumor. The initial response would be YES!!!

But let’s step back a bit. Would the answer be the same if the application was tracking hepatitis, syphilis, gonorrhea, Influenza, herpes, HIV, measles, or chicken-pox? These diseases present health departments with challenges to tracking and treatment. In fact these diseases are more of a health hazard than Coronavirus may prove to be.

Even if you think this is a good idea, what happens as the application evolves? Do you really want your phone telling the health department or law enforcement that you not only have the clap, but that you visited a particular massage parlor? How about your phone automatically warning others around you that you’re a pariah, because you’ve got the flu or that one of your kids has chicken-pox?

In an extreme scenario; do you want to have to verify and report to authorities that you’re going to have sex with an individual?

The application could in fact give that kind of power to an authoritarian regime. Phone A was in close proximity to Phone B for 43 minutes in a hotel that rents by the hour on this date. This was an unauthorized sexual event, warrants have been issued for the participants arrest.

Oh we say that could never happen. Yet, we have evidence of widespread surveillance by departments within our own government, of average people.

We’ve seen maps of cell phone data showing that people en-mass can be tracked going about their daily business. There is evidence to suggest that specific individuals can be isolated from the mass of data without too much effort or specialized tools.

During this pandemic, we’ve seen cell phone maps used by the New York Times to paint some areas of the country as “Non compliant in the lockdown” because the cell phones were traveling more than X miles from their point of origin.

The fact that the area of the country the New York Times called out, was a rural area and the nearest grocery stores were 15 to 20 miles away was conveniently omitted from that article when it first appeared. The Times, isn’t a government entity, nor are they involved in public health, but it demonstrates just how easily data can be misused.

This got me wondering… Just how much information is my phone, my smart watch, my computer, my ipad, even my car sending and to whom? The next question is, “If I turn these systems off, how much do I degrade the operation of my devices?

I was shocked when I pulled up the privacy setting in my phone.

Privacy

Almost every application is requesting access to location data.

Some of these applications make sense, Maps, Workout, AAA, and Airline applications.

Others, such as time tracking applications that will automatically start running when you get to work make sense. The apple wallet application asking for location data makes sense so that it can lookup and associate your charges.

Other Applications don’t make as much sense. Why does my bluetooth enabled thermometer application need to know where I was when I took my temperature? Why does an insurance application want to know where I am when I’m accessing it? Who cares where I was when I made a voice memo? Why does Wallgreens want to know where I am?  These applications I can deny access on. But am I really prohibiting them from getting that information?.

There are dating applications that say they won’t operate at all unless they have access to location data. This is to narrow the search parameters to local parties. Okay, then why do I get hit on from people 6000 miles away? Suppose I don’t want to use the cruising part of the app?

But it gets even more interesting when you dig deeper into system services, and significant locations. Yeah, I hadn’t told the system not to track my location. On the one hand the benefit is that your phone will keep track of where you parked your car. But does that data go anywhere? Or is that data simply used locally on the phone?

Answers to these questions are ambiguous. Obviously the phone itself is transmitting it’s unique ID to the cellular provider. But what of the other data?

I can tell the applications that they are denied cellular data services but does that mean that when the phone re-connects to the internet via WiFi at my home these application will send what they’ve recorded as a long data burst? Does denying cellular data access actually protect me from being tracked?

I’m suspicious of any government agency having easy access to my location. At the same time I recognize that the convenience afforded me by my cell phone is very cloying and that there’s a trade-off for convenience versus privacy.

There’s a cellular service called Patriotmobile.com part of their pitch is that they’ll help support Patriotic things and that they don’t sell your data. Okay fine, but if I have applications that are giving the data away, their service really doesn’t help.

That leaves using a VPN all the time. This solution is okay but I’ve had more than one situation where the VPN interfered with connectivity and created a less than convenient user experience. This is particularly true when the application updates.

I’ve got two VPN applications, One is part of my antivirus solution and the other is one that owns all their servers. I prefer the second one since the data isn’t just flowing through whatever server may be available.

After a while, I’d done all I could and opted to just turn off all the devices for a while. It’s clear that all of our technology has gotten away from us and significantly eroded our privacy.

Unfortunately, I can’t come up with any solution about regaining my privacy short of a VPN solution all the time. But even then, while using a VPN you’re not actually in very much control of what Apps running on your phone may be doing. They could still send the actual location data via the VPN.  I’m going to have to think about this some more.

I can say I’m not going to opt in to the Apple/Google contact tracking application. The potential for abuse of that data is simply too big for my tastes.
